| Looking forward to a detailed answer Shorthitter. : )
Makes sense.
Could it be that both swings feel different to a lot of us because the mind imprints the feel of the impact position through the auditory and physical feedback generated on contact with the ball, which is at different points of the swing for the irons and the driver, even though the swing is the same?

with iron we want to strike down so ball a bit back in stance...
with the driver the ball is forword and on tee so the downward part of the swing has heppened but because the ball is forwrd the arc is now going up on impact.....
make sense? i will re read when i get on PC... man i need a iphone..... yes you do need an iphone. but maybe u should get an iPad

| Basically, when you swing the same for both it means your take away and downswing is the same. The difference would only be your ball position and maybe swing thoughts.
Maybe SH can explain more in detail on the definition of a "swing".
I hope this topic/thread is helpful cos I have heard many players "advising" other players that hitting woods/irons are 2 different swing or even worse when its more than 2 swings. Keep it simple, it is only just 1 swing. You do not swing differently for your 5 iron from your PW and your driver from your 5 Iron.

| OK, here we go... remember this is my opinion only.... Replying to the same swing question.. I have uploaded some pics to try and demonstrate. 2 swings here, 1 driver, 1 Iron. Sorry I have the camera angle slightly different but you will get the basic idea. As you can see, with the driver the ball is forward in stance and she is standing slightly taller. This happens by default, the longer the club, you are further from the ball. But that does not mean the distance between your hips and the grip increases... ] As you can see the basic swing positions all the way to the top are the same.. the only difference is the position at the top, the driver is parallel, the shorter club is not. This is where a lot of people get into trouble, they try to get every club parallel at the top, if you get your wedge parallel, you have done something very wrong.... if your wedge is parallel then your driver will be pointing at the ground ah la John Daly... Transition from up to down... same... Post impacts the same... Follow through same... The difference is the iron strikes down on ball, so the bottom of the swing is actually in the dirt, hence a divot... after striking the ball.... The driver arcs out then starts up and strikes the ball. A lot of people try and hang back on right foot and lift the ball with the woods.. no need if it is forward in stance just swing through... | |

| Same swing seems to be the consensus. Here is a video I found on RSC's youtube channel www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9t5cyfMPdc | |

| Theoretically, it's suppose to be the same. But practically for me, definitely different. My woods are on a shallower swing plane as compared to my irons, which are steeper! | |

| Shorthitter, I must say that golfer has fantastic shoulder turn and power (squating on downswing).
Can I buy 1 of that swing please?

| Thanks for the detailed explanation n pics ShortHItter, there is no doubt both swings are the same, well almost. Her spine angle is a little more tilted at impact for the driver than with the irons.
The pics also confirms, for me at least, why amateurs like us feel the swing is different. It's the impact position that registers in the brain, of which both are different, driver ascending, irons hitting down.
For if we were to rehearse both a so called driver and iron swing without any ball, I'm guessing we wouldn't feel any difference since there is no impact to register in the mind, hence, the same swing.
It's more psychological than a real logical difference between driver and irons.

Can I buy 1 of that swing please? If she can do it... you can do it! You look at any good golfer and they have similar move.. I remember Padrig Harrington doing "squat" drills on his downswing... Malcolm... did I "do" what??????? (maybe I did.... )

At last year's BSO, I was amazed to see how much Padraig pushed into impact with his right side, his right foot was still almost fully planted at impact. http://www.golfrepublic.org/swing-sequence-and-videos-f15/padraig-harrington-s-very-compact-swing-sequence-at-the-barclay-s-t2168.htm Looking back on the pics though, Lam Chih Bing really squats into impact.

| Good observation, most people when they "push" they do it with right foot, which gets their head in front of the ball, and the foot comes off the ground which makes them too tall at impact.. Causes tops with irons, and "pop ups" with driver.... The squat keeps Padrig at the same height if not a little lower thru impact promoting clean strike... Takes a lot of drills and practice though.. as does any good golf swing.... | |

| Takes a lot to trust the squat move though, since the sensation is one of lowering yourself, which the conscious mind then tells you that you're going to stick the club into the ground doing that. But you've made it clear that's not the case SH, much appreciated! | |
