PostSubject: what degree wedges to buy?   what degree wedges to buy? I_icon_minitimeFri Feb 12, 2010 7:53 pm

i m using x20 graphite irons and distance as follows:
P iron is 80m, S iron is 55m.

what degree wedges should i buy for distances of 60m , 70m, below 50m?

i see most wedges are steel type, does it make any difference in my swing since i am using graphite.

please recommend some brands and prices.

Cleveland CG15, Titleist Vokey Spin Milled, Fourteen, Callaway X-Forged, Nike VR, TM TP xFT, plenty of brands, you will need to find the brand that feels best when struck.

as for lofts, its a personal preference, some usual configurations are
-48deg PW, 52 GW, 56 SW and 60 LW
-48deg PW, 54 SW, 58/60 LW
-etc etc

depends on yourself, distance is managed by choking down on the grip, a shorter backswing, variable swing speed.

Hi Golfer,

The most important wedge you can get in this instance is the gap or approach wedge which should fall between your P and S covering your 65 to 70 metre approach. Best if you try out some wedges at the range which has a pro shop so you can more accurately gauge the distance the wedge hits. The lob wedge should cover you for 50 metres and below, but beware, it is not an easy club to learn how to use because it has less margin for error. I won't get into the technical reasons why. But if you are willing to invest the time to learn how to control your shots with the lob wedge, it is a devastating tool. I'm guessing from the distances you hit your wedges, you are reasonably new to the game, the reason for my caution with getting a lob wedge.

As for what degree gap wedge to get, your X20 PW is 45 deg and SW is 55 deg, so you should get a gap wedge of 50 deg, unless of course you are using different wedges from the X20, then as a general gauge, take the difference in lofts between your PW and SW divide that difference by two, add the final result to your PW loft and you have the degree you need for your gap wedge.

There is a difference between using graphite and steel wedges of course, steel being heavier and generally stiffer than graphite. You just have to adjust to it, or seek out a clubfitter and let him advise you if changing the steel shaft to graphite is a viable option. It is a good idea to have your wedges in same shafts for consistency in performance and feel, though not always possible. I myself play with graphite shafts in my irons but have my wedges (PW, SW, LW) in steel, and have adapted to the difference. I may be wrong, but I didn't think having graphite shafts in my wedges are a good idea, since they tend to deaden feel on the more delicate shots. And I think steel gives a better dispersion as well for a tighter grouping, since wedge shots are meant to be more about accuracy rather than distance.

Golfer,

Just so you don't get confused, 48 deg was the standard some years ago. Now most PW are anywhere from 45 deg to 47 deg. Generally, the more game improvement in the club, the lower the loft. 48 deg PWs only hold true for the more traditional and blade irons.

My view only:

The degree or what wedge is dependent on how like the ball react based on one's standard. For distance wise, I think that can be overcome by playing around with the trajectory of the flight of the ball....say, you want to hit 60m...you can play 8iron, or if you want to flop it....choke down your PW ....but if the ball react on the green is not to your liking, then change wedge to one that suits your eye.

Sounds like you need a 50 or a 52 degrees to bridge your 2 other wedges.

What Duval said is correct too, many ways of playing a particular distance.

But if you're looking to keep the same swing and grip length, bridge it with a wedge.

I have tried various wedges and degrees. My conclusion is to get a 52deg (for approach) and 56 deg (for sand). That is because the PW is usually around 45 deg or so. If you need to do a lob, just open up the 56 deg which will give you 60 deg.

Cheers !

the s200 shafts that come with the vokey spin milled aren't too hard to handle. you can request for a custom order with a ns pro shaft as well. i reckon a 50 or 52 degree wedge wld be ideal to fill in that gap. my 52 degree fills in the gap between my pw and my 56 quite nicely. try and find a demo day and give the wedges a try.

For me, i have my irons in NS Pro 950 R and Golf Pride MC grip. My wedges are in TT DG S200 i think, and stock grip.

The swing weight is quite different but i have been conditioned such that i expect my irons and wedges to feel different

i was always told that wedges should have steel shaft cos when you use it for bunker shot and all, your graphite might break. But i dunno, that's what people tell me.

i see most wedges are steel type, does it make any difference in my swing since i am using graphite.

If i were you, I would practise to hit the distance in between. Reason being, most wedges in the market are not shaped like the X20s so maybe you might have another problem.

Adding a few thoughts....

You can try the wedge combo of TW...

He sometimes carries 52* 56* 60* ...making it a 4 wedge combination.

Or a 3 wedge combo, 52* for approach & 58* for sand /lob shot.
