PostSubject: My Fitting Story   My Fitting Story I_icon_minitimeTue Jan 26, 2010 10:12 am

I have been playing golf for the last few years and bought my first iron set in 2002. This set has been serving me well since then and with the avalanche of new and improved equipment on the market, I was very keen to get myself a new set so that I can keep up with the pack. So 2 years ago, I bought a set of new irons to try. But the experience was not that great. In the end, I thought that fitting would be the way to go as I can then get the most suited equipment for my game. I am missing distance from my irons and thought that a change of equipment is needed to keep up with the pack.

So last Sunday, I went for the session with an open mind and had decided to get a fitted wedge first since I would be using it a lot of times and I have reservations about the whole fitting business.

I always thought myself a stiff shaft player but lo and behold, I was proven wrong. The reg steel shaft on the irons were better for me and I can hit further and with a slight draw compared to the stiff which is either a straight or a slight fade. I have to work and concentrate on the stiff in order to do so while for the reg, it was simple. Even a bad swing would not punish that much.

After the session, I was convinced that fitting does work. Although I only bought the wedge but did not commit to the iron change, the experience made me realise that I am not as strong as I thought I was. Granted I could use the stiff shaft, it required me to concentrate hard. I have not reached that stage whereby I just need to aim and shoot and the shot will land where I intended all the time.

To me, golf is not only a game but a journey of self-discovery. It is little things like this that allow us to gain more knowledge about ourselves so that we can improve and enjoy the game more.

Quest,

good to hear about how u have opened up to this world of being fitted.

Be careful though for the road down this path of clubfitting is a slippery one. You will always be tempted to wonder 'Is there something better out there?'

This is a living example.

The ppl @ CustomGolf Bishan Range are great fitters. Look for Mr. BEN , James , Vick or Clayden. Ben is the one who fitted me my iron. They are so friendly and willing to go to the extra mile to correct my posture and gripping.

A Big Thank you,
Andy.

Great to hear that....

we need to conscientiously add Ben, Clayton, William and his team at Bishan on the custom fitting radar as well.

they have a flight scope thats linked to the Ping Fitting system.

Quest: My bad shots are usually a draw/hook.. Do you think if a change in shaft flex can help? I'd like to play a slight fade; somehow I think the slight fade lands nice and soft.
Maybe I should

ahfok88, were you fitted on the PING n-flight system? How was it?

The draw-type swing is better from light rough or in damp conditions, because you really need that solid, ball-squashing contact. The fade, which results from a more glancing, side-swiping blow, is terrible in moist conditions or when the wind is blowing. The fade doesn't penetrate the breeze and therefore doesn't hold its line.

The draw is better for the driver, too, because the ball goes farther and is much more effective in the wind. The fade does have its advantages, though, especially for stronger hitters. The fade generally goes higher, so you get more carry with the fairway woods and 2- through 6-irons. Players who make a lot of eagles generally are faders, because they can hold the greens with their long second shots on par 5s.

Sorry, not sure I'll be any help here. Draw/hook may not be the shaft. Better to get someone look at your swing to get a better idea.
