| I knwo of non conforming driver and balls but have not heard of non conforming irons. My friend wanted to buy Cobra FZ irons I think and his friend was saying that it is non conforming. I tried to check at randa.org but only managed to find the drivers conforming and non conforming lists.
Anyone can help with the above?

| Due to new grooves regulation, most irons will become non conforming but it doesn't worry amateurs for many years unless you intend to play in pro events | |

| For those who are playing the new titleist AP, CB and MBs or mizuno irons like MP58 and 68, they are using the new grooves.
The wedge choice with new grooves are the ones that have very limited options for amateurs should they decide to try out the new ones.
Here's my feel about them: the grooves will impact the most and do make a difference more to the avg-good amateur than a pro or a newbie in terms of scores and shotmaking. I would say that if your handicap is around 11 or better and decide to game these, it will definitely take time to get used to and play to a level you were before.
Around the greens, when the good amateur hits a chip or a short pitch w the new wedge, the spin is definitely alot less. What is normally a hop and a sit now will have a few feet more of roll. These few feet will bother the pro slightly less as they have the better ability to hole those 5-6fters more than the amateur. Those will account for a few drop shots for us.
Also when hitting from the rough, it is also very noticeable that distance control is affected particularly with the wedges again. I have put these wedges in play and from the rough, I have caught a shot from 80yds with a LW where the ball just keeps rolling and rolling off the green despite hitting it high. I also have caught a few where they were woefully short either by hitting it too high on the clubface or just by having abit of grass in between club and ball at impact.
Some will feel that if we aren't pros, why bother to use them in the 1st place. Well, I think that despite the fact that I will never play a pro's game, playing and experiencing the same conditions and equipment will make me appreciate what these guys are facing and to be able to play well and score well with those limitations makes me admire them even more.

| Got to revive this thread. Is it necessary for amateurs to use conforming irons when entering local competitions? | |
