Super new to Golf!

Hello folks!

I've just literally bought a driver a few days ago, and started hitting the range @ OCC. Have had prior experience hitting the driving range a few years ago, decided to make a comeback to golf this year, due to business social environment needs as well finally picking up Golf as is. 

A couple of question;

• Would it be possible to obtain a PC without golf lessons? (Self taught & Learning from peers)
  
• Anyone keen to share their PC experience and what was tested?
  
• Any recommendations to buying a brand new set of golf clubs, - drivers, irons, wedge & putt? 
  

I'm an absolute complete beginner, far from PC, and trying to get the PC sorted. 

Keen to hit the range together and get to know fellow beginners here if anyone's down to hit at OCC.

I also just started golf not too long ago, probably about a year odd for reasons similar to yours.

From what I see now, spending money on lessons is probably more worthwhile than spending money on new clubs. New clubs give you confidence, self satisfaction and probably motivation. Lessons impart techniques, which would get you started on the right note. This is important as generally people like the things that they are good/getting better at. 

In a sense I was lucky, one of my colleague loaned me a beginner set and I just went for lessons. Then, the itch set in, and I bought my own irons and SW. Today, I look at my irons, and they are all disfigured . This is the result of inconsistent swings and hacking on the course. 

Conclusion. Get a second hand set, get lessons, and when you think you are good enough, buy a set. This is what I would have done if I had knew. 

Just my two cents worth.

That's exactly the kind of advice I was looking for. 

Having thought about it, I would definitely spend on a 2nd hand beginner set and focus on lessons that has a PC tied to it. 

Any recommendations for a good spot for lessons? I've had a look online, but it'll be better to have a ballpark of good training grounds to start with.

It will be great to find a used beginner set to start with, once u are fairly well with ur swing then buy a better set (dun have to be new one) to hone in the "swing". Once u can play a fairly well score ie ave 100s, then get a new set.

Play with ur friends club and then decide which suits u best.

As for coach, it is best that u can find a Friend who can join u for lesson. Always better to find a coach whom u can relate with. Find one near ur area so u will have more chances to practise at the same place.

Hi willytan, 

That's right. I can hit fairly "ok" with the driver (Taylormade - R9), with the occasional or rather frequent slice. (Thus the need for lessons to correct this)

Thanks for the practical tip Willytan. Definitely looking for another golf beginner to sign up lessons with.

Do you think it'll be better if I purchase the beginner 2nd hand set, hit the range and try the different irons, drivers, wedge? 

Also, where do you practice putting anyways? I saw a putting green at OCC, wonder you need a certain membership to practice putt?

I always advise my friends who want to start golf to always get professional lessons. Don't half ass it, self thought is not the way to go if you want to get more serious. If cost is a problem, JB is much cheaper, with as capable pros.

Equipment wise, there's just tons of used clubs out there, walk around far east SC or the one at Kreta Ayer road.

There are lots of used set avail either on Golfsite or can go down creativejoe @ Chinatown. Get a graphite shaft irons for a start. Focus on ur irons rather than woods. 

Go range with ur friends or join those beginner chat grps. Surely have some itchy backside golfers who keep on changing equip. Join them at the range and Tey out their equip, better than going to demo where u need to q for ur turn to try out the equip.

Putting?
Occ has a putting green but not sure if u have to pay for it. But I know that MBGC one needs to pay.

For shortgame practice, go to secret place, Seletar Country Club driving range. I was so surprised to see how realistic it was and also practically empty. Everything you need is there, range - got, chipping - got, putting - got, peace'ish - got.

Just curious and no offence intended.

Is it really useful for all fresh beginners to band together so soon? Unless it's for TCSS on golf interests etc, I feel it will be counter productive if ranging together and picking up all the wrongs moves and tips. After all, it might be a case of the blind leading the blind.

I would rather finish the lessons with my coach first and practising myself till what the coach taught is ingrained before joining a beginner group. Then only it will be more enjoyable as the group can go golf together.

I would encourage beginners to get their basics right (so get some lessons from coach, proficient friends, etc) and when you can comfortably advance the ball and play at a pace that would not unnecessarily hold up the game for others (if you can't get out of the bunker after 3 tries, use your hand wedge! ), I would encourage you to game with the better players so you can observe and learn. There are many proficient golfers who do not mind gaming with beginners. Heck, we were all one-time beginners. So look for people you feel comfortable with play on!

Yeah I do see where you're coming from. 

I think the consensus here would be: Take lessons from a pro, get PC, then tee off. 

For me, it's really about getting to know more golfers here, of the same / higher level.

That's a great encouragement mate! Definitely helps us beginners ease in better with such support! It can be intimidating sometimes!

Not all seasoned golfers would want to or have the patience to play with newbies so having a group in actual fact helps (together with proper coaching) to progress in the game as newbies would able to play at the similar place during a game and not feel pressured.

I think beginners banding together for the sake of making friends, or just having company is fine. If it fuels motivation and passion then it's great!

Tips wise from fellow beginners, I'll take it with a pinch of salt; it may work, it may not work. If you are going to a coach or pro, then it would make more sense to just listen to them. After all, you're paying for it. 

That being said, even the "correct" swing may not work for you. Everyone on tour essentially have different swings. Correct me if I'm wrong, I don't even watch golf. lol. 

Still, I think it's great for beginners to go on green together. wait. going on green is always great!

It's good to start with lesson together with some friends who share the same passion. This way you guys can range and motivate each other along the way.

It helps to range with some more experience golfer as they might be able to point out your mistakes because you cannot "see" your own mistakes.

Yes, and always go for the most forgiving 2nd hand graphite shaft iron set to begin win. When you start to play 100s, you can consider "upgrading" your weapon.

You guys have been amazing with the support. It definitely allowed a bit more confidence for us super beginners!
