A FERRARI was left a mangled mess after it hit a guardrail, then a tree, along Nicoll Highway at about 7am on Saturday.
The driver, however, walked away from the crash almost unharmed.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said an ambulance arrived at the scene at 7.18am to find the man standing outside his car.
An SCDF spokesman said he had cuts on his arms and forehead.
When The Sunday Times visited the driver, Mr Lim Chai Meng, 36, at the Singapore General Hospital on Saturday, he did not seem seriously hurt.
He was in a room watching TV. He said he was 'fine and resting' and declined to say more. (http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/Singapore/Story/STIStory_468623.html)

| I drive on Nicoll Highway every day to get to work and yes, there are a lot of bicycles. The damage to the car is massive. He must've been going at super high speeds. The speed limit on Nicoll Highway is only 70 kph - he should've known better. | |

| Hard to say if he was going more then 70, or if so, how much more. Let's not jump to conclusions here that the driver was going insanely fast or being reckless.
On a wet road, if you swerve to avoid something/someone, and in a twitchy RWD like a 360 or 430, it's not difficult to 'lose it' and hit guardrails. Especially in a twitchy RWD like this, hitting the brakes on wet roads isn't likely to slow the car down much, ABS or not.
Keep in mind that Ferrari body components are usually lightweight aluminum or carbon fiber, so it's not hard to get external panels bent out of shape. Hitting the curb would also mess up the aluminum control arms and suspension system, etc
If any of you have been in a crash at 50 km/h in a normal car, you'd know how much damage that can do to a normal car (i.e. normal steel/aluminum body panels, instead of exotic materials), so extrapolate that for a Ferrari....
Either way, good that driver was safe. CNY coming in 6 weeks, be careful driving in the rain. See you guys in 6 weeks!

| ghoonk, I agree that we shouldn't jump to conclusions about the speed at which he was going. Perhaps he was going at 70 kph. But if he was and that's the damage you get to a Ferrari if it hits a guardrail at that speed, then I'm surprised. In any case, at least he's safe | |

| With that kind of damage, indeed, a very lucky chap. He walked away with scratches. I hope he learn his lessons.
How will the insurance cover this? Full?

| Since no 3rd party involved, looks like he's going to have to claim own damage (bye bye NCB). Looks like a total loss case, insurance will pay the market value, not finance outstanding, but people who buy this sort of car usually pay cash and not take finance. am taking an educated guess that the driver was a banker working in ORQ
@ts, CF tends to be pretty brittle. You langgar a CF bonnet and a normal bonnet at same speed, CF bonnet will look much worse off. I think he was doing a bit more than 70, but not 100+. A crash at 20 km/h already not kind to the car, so you can imagine how much damage at 70-90 km/h.

| There are about 3 ferraris in ORQ, and this doesnt appear to be one of them.... Will have a look on monday to see if there are any fewer ferraris in the car park. Heh. | |

Was going to buy one but seeing that it's sooo brittle, I'll opt for a bicycle instead

Anyway, with that kind of damage, I think he's travelling more than 80kmh.... I think so too but it may be the make-up of the car which is very brittle. If he was going slower, he would have been able to avoid the bicycle but then again, who knows?
