Guidance from GR Veteran

Dear Veterans/ Mentor,

A totally new joe here seeking to pick up golf..would be starting lesson to pick up this gentleman sport in mid July..

Just very curious, what would be a good driver(forgiving) and wedges to start with? I am a little confused with the adjustable loft setting and the degree of wedges that sends golfers sending that extra tad bit for a 1-2 degree difference.. I tried looking through the videos but really, due to my little knowledge and experience, cannot really understand which is better for me.. Hahah..

Also, would it be better for a greenhorn like me to pick up 3/5W and master them before choosing a Utility Wood to use, or would it be wiser to opt for a utility wood and have it to used for swinging practice?

Probably I can check with my golf pro, but thought advices from GR Veterans and mentors would be very very helpful..

Driver, it's up to your budget and the look of it.

Wedges also about the same but recommended it's abt 4 deg loft difference.

Here what I would suggest you doing.

Spend more time and money on coaching. Eqpt wise, for starters, get a second hand set. You can find lots of it here, or at Far east Shopping Centre or in Joe golf at krata Ayer.

Get a 7i, sw, putter should be enough for beginner lessons

Work really hard, then think about hybrids, fw, and lastly driver (most difficult in the bag and really exposes swing flaws)

Get em used clubs. If you are dishearten and give up, will not be so expensive...

when i was young, i saw the comedy...

as i grew older, i feel the love story...



when i was like you many moons ago, i share a certain perspective of golf...

everything wanna try, wanna buy, wanna wack, smlj also can do....

now i dun want to complicate my golf, just do simple things...

things i know i can do and do better....

however i feel for you, cos i was once a beginner as well...

but since u ask for guidance for this journey you gonna take...

i hope i can offer some measure of assistance to help you along the way...

1) be realistic about the game, u cant get what u want with minminal effort

2) only GOOD practise makes perfect,  hitting 500 balls/day dun make u a subpar player

3) good family support, i know u have priorities and responsiblities, but they must know u need your space

4) dun nelgect the short game, good short game has saved me many times n i'm sure it will save u as well

5) perserverance, there will be good and bad games.... dun let both affectyour mindset, consistency is key

oh yes, one more, lastly, DUN GIVE UP!

@slinger: your starting statement sends me through the roof. Haha.. That was a great comedy, period. Guess at 25,i am slowly adapting the love aspect of the comedy. Yeah, you are totally spot on with the anxiety and enthusiasm in a totally clueless young man wanting to try everything and buy whatever he hears is good for a beginner.. Glad that my self-realization and timely control have saved me a tad bit from impulsive purchase that's highly likely marketing gimmicks.. I would keep the 5 hot tips right in my pocket and training my fundamental is my key now.. I am kinda worried I would pick up bad habits;swing posture, momentum and etc and thus are staying away from the temptation of hitting balls at range until I start attending my lesson.. Your advices to greenhorn like me are valuable and would keep me going to keep improving.. Thanks!
