Acushnet’s Cobra brand has not renewed or signed any new players this year, agents said. One former Cobra player, 2006 U.S. Open winner Geoff Ogilvy, will return to Acushnet’s Titleist brand in 2010 for a hat and bag deal that pays less money than his previous arrangement with Titleist and Cobra. Ogilvy tried and failed to command $3 million a year from other equipment makers, industry sources said.

Nike wrapped up a performance-based, multiyear extension with Lucas Glover that will pay as much or more money than his previous deal if he has a comparable year to 2009, when he won the U.S. Open. Nike also signed rookie Jamie Lovemark, a former No. 1-ranked amateur who turned pro earlier this year.

Two other notable players, K.J. Choi and Robert Allenby, have not re-signed longstanding deals with Nike and Srixon, respectively. Equipment sources said Srixon offered Allenby a 70 percent pay cut from his previous $1 million-a-year contract and Nike asked for substantial cuts to Choi’s estimated $1.5 million annual deal.

Times are bad and the industry is feeling it.

REX....i was talking to some of the golf club manufacturing recently and it appears that the US is the biggest hit.

Europe is also taking a hit and Asian with the growing China and Korean markets is not so bad. but i doubt that the increase in Asia will match the decline in the world's biggest golf marketplace.

It will be tough year or two ahead and there will definitely be consolidation. even the biggest shaft manufacturer i was told is in bad shape.

hence cutting sponsorship and advertising appears to be the immediate cost relief.
