| Subject: Kids Club - 3yo - What can you get them? Sat Nov 16, 2013 11:34 pm | |
| Hi All,
My 3 year old nephew is starting to get interested in golf...through his plastic toy set. My sister wants to get him real equipment to get him started. My concern is as kids grow fast, they outgrow their equipments as well and there is always the risk that the lose interest over time.
Can I check with fellow forumers if you have any experience in this area? What equipment would you get your kids (3-5 year olds) if they are keen to start playing golf? Toy set? Just a club? The works?
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Cheers! | |

| Kids sets cost like below 100 dollars used. With bag. Try looking at far east shopping center. Seen old and new sets at greenfield before. | |

| The question is Why a 3yo wants real set? Don't get me wrong bro, not trying to be cheeky here
I got my 8 yo girl started with lessons using a set from US Kids, when she was about 5 yo. It's kinda lost on her as her strength is not quite there and I feel while she enjoyed her lessons, I don't think she quite 'get it' yet (it could be just her!)
Now my 5yo boy now is very keen and he can easily inherit her sister's set. He is always putting at home on the putting mat and sneaking to the lawn to do chipping. It could be a boy thing. But I'm observing and see how long this interet will last. It's a matter of time I'll start him on lessons, but definitely not for a 3yo IMHO
And from the sound of it, your nephew's parents are not golfers, it may even tougher to keep the flame alive

| Hi PocketAce,
Spot-on, my sis and her husbands don't play and I want to advise them from being too excited and spending too much. I'll probably advise her to start with an iron and a putter from US Kids to start with and to use those harmless practice balls.

| I bought 1 piece of US kids iron from golf house for my 4 yr old rather than getting the 3 piece set from FESC.. The best price offered to me for the 3 piece set with bag was $189 at FESC.. | |

| A 3 year old needs only an driver or iron, and a putter. That would be it. The putter so you can have them tag along on the green and show them how to hit some putts. The driver or iron would be so they can try to hit some tennis balls or something soft inside. I would be very hesitant to take a 3 year old to the range as there is so much that can go wrong there when the attention span starts to waiver after a while.
However there are cases of kids that are totally into golf and get totally engrossed with whacking that ball. If that is the case I would still say they need no more than 3 clubs: Wood, iron, and putter.

| I spoke to a good friend and coach here before about getting my son to start golf. He was about 3 at that time. The coach was very candid (which I appreciated). At that age, the child is a bit too young to appreciate the sport. The muscles / physique aren't as developed which could mean that the child might actually injure himself if he's not careful. It would be better to wait until the child is about 4-5 years old and even so, that depends from child to child.
While a lot of us aspire to raise children like Tiger and Rory, the reality is quite different. They should come to love the sport rather than to have it forced upon them. I'm not saying that we, as parents, should encourage and nudge them along but we need to be mindful of many factors, including their age and abilities.
The last thing I want to see is my son hating the sport not because he's bad at it but because he's a bit too young for it. I'm hopeful that he'll grow into the sport and come to love it but he has to do it in his own time.

Love US kids brand cos they are lighter and easier for kids to swing. However, even finding one is tough!

| Hi Iuh,
Thanks for the tip. Coincidentally, I was at GolfHouse earlier today and saw the clubs. They are selling them for SGD 89 less 30% each (SGD 62.30) for irons. I guess better to start with this if nothing else.
Hi All,
Thanks all for sharing your thoughts.

| Hi. When my girl started golf, I got her one putter and one pitching wedge from US kids. That should be more than enough. They grow very fast. | |

| For what it's worth, I got myself a US Kids putter for my son. That's as far as I went. | |

| Just an update...saw a 3pc Cleveland set with a bag (kids 3-5) at Isetan Scotts Road going for SGD 199. Sis went for that instead...which is close to 3 US Kids clubs. | |

| And in a case of buyer's remorse...was at FESC earlier and saw a PG 4pc + bag set for just SGD 130 at Transview. Future reference in case anyone digs up this thread. | |
