Hope you enjoy reading this. Brings back old memories!!!!

No matter what our kids and the new generation think about us,

WE ARE AWESOME !!!!
OUR LIFE IS A LIVING PROOF !!!!

To Those Born during 1930 - 1979

TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED THE 1930's, 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's!!

We were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cots covered with bright colored lead-base paints.

We had no child proof lids on medicine bottles, locks on doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no caps or
helmets on our heads.

As infants & children, we would ride in cars (with 7-8 passangers) with no car seats, no booster seats, no seat belts, no air bags, bald tires and some times no brakes.

Riding in the back of a Bullock cart or a lorry was always a special treat.

We shared one drink with four friends, from one bottle and no one actually died from this.

We ate kevun, aggala, vadai, pani pol & other sweets made with honey & sugar but were not over weight.

WHY?

Because we were always outside playing....that's why!

We would leave home in the morning, go to school mostly on foot and play all day, as long as we were back before dark.

No one was able to reach us all day. There were no cell phones, not even land lines and, we were OKAY.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps, large coconut leaves and then ride them down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem. We played marbles, rag dolls or if we did not have any toys we used our imagination to create one.

We did not have Play stations, Nintendo's and X-boxes. There were no video games, no 150 channels on cable, no video, movies or DVD's, no surround-sound or CD's, no cell phones, no personal computers, no Internet and no chat rooms.

WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.

We would get punishments like caning, spankings with sticks, or just bare hands and no one would call child services to report abuse.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or just walked in and talked to them. Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law - all the time !

These generations have produced some of the best Managers risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever.

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas. What can kids today do besides push buttons..

We had freedom, failures, successes and responsibilities, and we learned how to deal with it all.

If YOU are one of them, CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives for our own good.

While you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave and lucky their parents were.

Thanks TDO. Yes, things were very different then.

Personally that is the reason why I am not in favor of the direction that Singapore is heading. Can't stop the winds of change.
One more gen after us and it will be another very different Singapore.

Can you tweaked your thread subject to 1970s instead of 1960s?

That's the period that the text in the doc alluded to

Thx TDO.

Brings back memories of when life was good and the world had not gone Politically Correct.
Do not care what anyone says, these where the days and they will never return.

Remember when you could take a few balls and a seven iron to the local park and have hours of fun. Now you are in trouble for "Damaging the Grass". Sad very sad.confused

I remembered the layang part. Get cuts all over the fingers when flying the kite.
Also catching and fighting the spiders. White face for males and black face for females. When our male spider loses, will hold a female one by the top and let the male have sex with it. Wonder why after sex they became braver and can fight again. Without it, they see their opponent, they turned tail and ran away  ha ha...those were the days...lol!

In the 1960s, I remember we played hantam bola, kotok ayam, police catch thieves, catching spiders, fliying kites with stings glued with glass powder, and yes, plain old sitting in a cardboard box and sliding down the grass slopes in Margaret Drive. We have fun war games with fire crackers that were made like mini rockets and stuck to the ground at an angle to fire at the "enemy".

Boy, those were the fun days, until serious injuries from fire crackers resulted in the subsequent partial banning of fire crackers in 1970 and total ban in 1972.

I am sure there are plenty of stories to be recalled by those born in those years.Laughing

I was very good at hantam bolah so much so it distorted my  centre and index fingers, when class starts I was drenched and sweaty!  Teacher would scold me for being all wet & dirty!

When we were young I remember we cycled into SICC via Leonie Rd chop down tembusu branch to make "lastic" sling shot, no one seem to bother. Than we also play blow pipe with roll up mud shoot birds and lizards, made riffle saw from wood panel top with copper pipe that really look like a rifle. Sell them to ang mo kia  for $2.00 good money when we were young!

Catching spider was also one of our favourite during school holidays, some time we came across
snakes folded up inside in the leaves what a shock!

We had good fun during our kampong days when we were young, no computers, no home phone, not many homes have television, no fridge, just ah peh bicycle belongs to our father to go around!! Back in the 60s!

In fact, there were so many things that we can do as a child back then. Our kampong spirit was very strong back then. We were unable to have a TV and have to resort to watching our neighbour's TV at 1st storey. They were kind to allow us to watch cartoons from outside their windows. How I cherish the good old days.

I also remember the good old days especially with the kites. We will use bear bottles or florescent tubes, hand grind to powder form and then stick the powder onto 1,000 yds of strings. The fun part was the kite fights during school holiday where you can see many kites on the sky trying to kill each other.

Other games were marbles with coins (must obtain license), bigger clay marbles where we tried to smash our opponent's into pieces, soccer, spiders, zero point, rounders, "selong", police and thiefs, etc.. The list just goes on and on. Nowadays kids are just into electronic gadgets.

Wow! That's good sharing of old memories. I also remember we always wait in anticipation the the Hungry Ghost Festival where wayangs or ker tai were performed for our good brothers. There in the shows, there will be the "tikam tikam" man selling his sweets. Sometimes you tear a sachet to see what you won, sometimes he pick coloured sticks. The best part is reserved for the performers. We cheeky boys will sneak under the stage and look up between the planks, if you know what I mean, especially for the ker tai female singers.Smile

For those staying near "Si Ka Teng" at the old SBS 65 interchange, you'll remember the paper-mache man with his trishaw filled to the brim with his paper-mache creations.  Those were truly work of art and passion. Some of them were so elaborate that I wonder who will buy them.

I used to chit-chat with him quite a bit as a young boy

Let me see if I can find a pic of this man on the internet....

I remember Yong Tau Foo at Farrer Park swimming pool after swim ate that, 20cents for 10 pieces!  drink the YTF soup simply delicious!

Waterloo Street Indian Rojak one of the best Rojak in Singapore, today's Indian
rojak the taste is no where near!

Beauty World Rojak those days charge $1.00per plate considered very expensive but taste out of the world, the Hainanese ice kacang inside the wet market one of the best!

Rex cinema back lane Hainanese Chengdol 5cents 3/4 cup, 10 cents full cup!
I drank 5cents 2 cups! Indian Rojak and mee siam also taste very good can't
get that kind of standard today!
