Really awesome game. I haven't had so much fun golf and camaraderie wise in quite awhile. You guys made playing off the blue / black tees fun instead of torturous.

Every partnership in the sixes went right to the wire along with some not so subtle MF-ing, punctuated with good laughs along the way. Capped off with a great comeback from the underdogs to take it by a hole, thanks to Asahi (forget knitting la bro, play golf).  

Thanks for joining us too Eiji, Mloy, Techno and Meia.

It was a great game. Really enjoyed the company, as usual. MBGC is a tough course, especially when the whites become blues. But I was fortunate to stay out of the bunkers and I think that's the key to coming home happy. 

We're glad that we didn't play in front of the food chain flight. Those guys can really bomb their drives. Especially Mr.79 who (even with a half, somewhat "lame-ass" swing) can still get the ball super straight and long. 

Weather-wise, we were very fortunate. The clouds were dark and there was a bit of drizzle for a short while but nothing bad enough to get us off the course or have buggies on track only. The wind, however, was strong and it made the game all that more interesting and comical. 

Ended up with some food though I lost $ to Eiji who I believes only brings out the big guns when there's actual money on the table. And, when that happens... watch out!

Thanks for the fun folks! And thanks also to Asahi, Bird, GF and Derek for getting the game going. It was fun to tag along and watch in awe from the distance

Having been in hiding,  I'd forgotten just how much fun these games with the GR gang are.....esp the TCSS sessions after....as usual, i was quiet being my shy, reserved self and just taking in the atmosphere........

But my flight ah....haiz...like playing at driving range.....noisy as hell....my apologies to the wildlife on the course for ruining their day.......

More like secret training!!!  In golfing skills and mind f know-how, both areas were excellent!

Eh... the smallest prey ate all the big boys at the top of the food chain at the last hole for the only win in the sixes, what knitting you talking about?  

This game was the most fun I have had playing golf in a long long time ... the company, the golf, the weather ... everything was perfect (with the exception of the state of my game ...)

Couple of things stood out ...

1) We played sixes with no strokes asked for or give ... it was awesome.  Most of the time a birdie was needed to win the hole.  Only on a couple of holes was a Par sufficient to win.  The tenacity shown by everyone was awesome.

First pairing ... GF and Asahi vs Birdman and myself ... all square ... if I recall, both GF and Birdman sank crucial putts on the last hole to ensure it was pushed

Second pairing ... Birdman and GF vs Asahi and myself ... all square ... we were 1 down until the last hole and needed a birdie to win after GF chipped to 8 inches from just off the green.  By sheer luck, Asahi's ball was on the same line as mine but 1 meter behind, he gave me a great read and I managed to creep the 12 footer in for birdie to even the six

Final pairing ... Birdman and Asahi vs GF and myself ... i remember being quietly confident as we started this six ... having birdied the hole before ... I was first to tee off on the island hole (MBGC #13).  Hit it safely to the middle of the green with about a 25 foot putt.  GF went next and went slightly closer.  Asahi put it on as well and then Birdman hit it sweet and stuck it to 6 feet.  3 Pars and 1 birdie later, they were 1 up.  GF won the next hole and I took Hole 15 to bring us 1 up.  After squaring Hole 16, we were 1up with 2 to play.  Birdman hits a partial PW from 87m to 4 feet to take the hole!!! All square going into Hole 18 ...

Birdman and Asahi tee off, both safely in the FW.  I hit a big slice right and missed the bushes only because we were playing off the black tee.  GF fires another nicely down the middle (he was 14/14 for fairways hit).  GF and Asahi get on in 3 and Birdman and I find hazards with our 2nd shots.  Birdman plays from within the hazard (water levels were down) but doesn't make clean contact and the ball trundles into the small burn just before the green.  I hit one of the nicest shots of my life with a 4 hybrid (off an upslope by the hazard) after taking a penalty drop and put it on the green from about 175m.

Asahi and GF both hit their first putts and Asahi runs it past by 8 feet while GF leaves it short by 6 feet.  Looks like it is going to be another squared six ... how wrong I was ... Asahi rolls his putt right into the heart for Par ... GF having seen the break from my putt ... lines it up and makes a smooth stroke ... it is tracking ... tracking ... tracking and makes a final roll ....

and stops hanging over the lip of the cup ... half a roll more and it would have dropped ... a really close finish to a really close game ... you could not have scripted it better

Final Result (after 18 holes)

Asahi - up 1 six
Birdman - up 1 six

Derek - down 1 six
GF - down 1 six

So, the facts have been laid out, I'll leave it to the readers to interpret the results ...

Some observations:
While his driver was smoking hot, GF was having a really poor day with his irons, everything was blocking right ... and he still came back in 79, from the black tees ... imagine what his scores will be when his irons are working againg

For someone claiming to play in the 90s, Asahi was 1 under after the first 4 holes.  But truth be told, he did blow up a few holes here and there so final score might be close to what he claims ... but on a match play basis ... that is another story

Birdman (and also GF) definitely prove how important a good short game is to scoring well.  Many times, be it from pretty far off the green or in greenside bunkers, they both showed how having touch can save many many shots over the course of the entire game.

Myself ... putting could have been better overall, both distance control on longer putts as well as one short (3 foot) putt missed and two 6-foot putts missed ... but not going to feel to0 bad about it ... sandy greens sometimes require a bit of luck.  Aside from that, realised that my long game is the lousiest in the entire flight.  Or more specifically, I had the most inconsistent long game.  Some shots were awesome, great contact and direction, some just curved right or pulled into trouble (definitely suspect out to in swing path on my wood, something to assess when I have some time at the range).  My iron game was ok, but from the black, opportunites to use irons would be limited.

However, the thing I am really kicking myself over is poor course management.  On hole 8, given OB left and space right (albeit with some bunkers), I should have aimed to the right side of the green instead of the center (especially given my tendency to pull).  1 OB and an indifferent chip later, carded a triple bogey.  On hole 14, at 448m, into a headwind, absolute no reason to pull out driver.  I simply had no way to reach to green in 2 even with 2 perfect shots.  I hit a great drive, it drew very slightly left, went further than everyone ... and finished inside a bunker.  Blasted out, then hit a jerky 5 wood into another bunker, screwed up the bunker shot to the green but luckily it ricocheted and landed outside.  Easy pitch but mentally I had given up so left it short.  Another indifferent chip and 2 disinterested putts for a quadruple bogey.  On hindsight, hitting a 5 wood and a 5 hybrid would have given me a full PW into the green and completely avoided all the hazards, even if I missed left or right by 40m.  Chances are would have made bogey or double at worst.

Comparing against a much stronger player like GF has clearly shown me what I need to work on to improve and hopefully get to his level.
