| Hi all, like to check if anyone experience this. I have been to the range quite regularly and experiencing pain at wrist, elbow and shoulder, left shouder to be exact. After some exercises and rest, the wrist n elbow pain went away, but the ache at my shoulder still persist. Is it a golf thing? Injury? Its been several months, anyone had this and what did you do to solve this problem? I had the same issue on my elbow thru tennis n squash. Would going to the chinese physician help or a chiropractor? Thank you. | |

| How many balls do you hit each time you're at the range and how regular are you at the range? | |

| if one does not warm up enough, he/she will get injury even from hitting just a few balls. The techniques also play an important part. | |

| In Singapore, most if not all ranges uses rubber mats. Hitting irons on to the mat could hurt us due to the bounce and impact. | |

| I have been through similar pain in the left shoulder due to golf before, even with regular gym work and fitness regimes. There are only two long term solutions - take a break completely from golf to do light strengthening exercises (your physio will help), and get a coach who will invariably tell you to relax your grip/arms when swinging.
I'm sure you feel the enjoyment of hitting balls at the range, and want to do it for years to come. Hope you recover and groove a swing that allows you to play golf for a long long time.

| I had a pain in my right elbow but now it is getting better as I am seeing a coach and he is correcting my swing. I think technique plays a big part! | |

Brother Cnng121, I commend you on reaching semi-retirement and on your ability to devote to your passion in golf. There's no better way, I'm sure you have discovered, to spend one's leisure time than in pursuing this magnificent obsession. I started golf late and have spent the past 3 years quite fanatical about it, so allow me to share if you will indulge me. One of my main objective is to ensure I can play golf for as long as possible, age not withstanding (am 40 plus). Have been devoting almost 365 days a year at the range for 3 years and here's a simple maxim I found out. If it HURTS, I am doing it WRONG. There's no two ways about it. If I swing incorrectly, I can hurt my elbow, wrist, etc after a couple of shots, even today. So conditioning is not the whole story. If I swing correctly, I can hit 300 balls, daily, without any part hurting, except general soreness. I notice fatigue level is also reduced. For instance, if my elbow hurts, say outside of left elbow, I know my elbow was not on plane and I dragged it with the elbow. If my wrist hurts, I know I was too handsy. Etc, etc. The pain is the body's way of telling us we are not using the body part within the correct range of motion and consequently putting too much torque or shear forces through that particular joint. And yes, warming up is important. I usually start my sessions by chipping about 10-20 balls, moving up to pitching 50m-75m with wedges, before starting with short irons, mid irons, long irons and finally woods. When I am loose and limber, I know I am warmed up. If I start the day's session with driver, I know I am asking for trouble. At 40 plus, I am turning into a stubborn old git with father time and reluctant to change my habits. But I cannot argue with physics and bio-mechanics. So, yes, go see a sinseh, have the pain relieved. But, to avoid sponsoring the sinseh's children's tertiary education (repeated recurrence of the pain every time you have a session at the range), go to the root of the matter and get a good swing from a good coach. In the long run, it will work out far cheaper and golf becomes a lot more enjoyable without the pain, the layoff, the therapy sessions, etc. Our recovery ability is not getting any younger. Bros TK and Nutty88, I commend you, you are absolutely right. Just my two-cents. Peace.
