Workability in drivers

Hi all,

Wondering which driver head out there gives the best workability.

Wanna fade and draw the ball off the tee.

But want a decent distance as well.




There are 3 assumptions here...

1. Forgiving and workability don't make a good marriage.

2. It's not the arrow, it's the Indian. (not racist intent here)

3. The most workable driver.... Is a strong 3w.


Wondering what you guys thoughts are on this.

i think the key is with the amount of offset.

drivers with too much offset are not very workable, esp if u are trying to hit a cut or fade

so find a driver that sits square at address. then its easier to work it left or right

You want a workable driver, get the Nike driver that Tiger and Rory are using. It obviously can curve the golf ball in either direction easily. The slightest twitch seems to impart a lot of side spin which is key for shot shaping.

I once had a Nike VR Pro, extremely workable. Sent me to parts of the golf course, both left and right, I never knew existed.

Gave it away and started searching for something more suitable for my (lousy) skill level and finally settled on Cleveland.

Guessing the tour versions are a bit more workable?

if u aint finding at least 10/14 fairways or shooting in the 70s....

there are more pressing issues then trying to work the drivers....

How about straight-ability? Mr katsu, does your driver just wanna go nothing but straight? I'm always looking for one of those

Try razr fit. It has face angle setting and weight bias setting. I slice and hook without even trying 30m sideways also can.

i tot driver workability is related to open stance or close stance.........no?

I agree.. right now, it's a task just to work my driver to get 10/14 fairways.

Any driver is workable in the hands of a good player.

Gave up on straight for the driver....

When straight happens, it's a sight to behold.


Better results if I set up for a draw, or a fade.

Want to take out one side of the hole when I tee..

270yd drives with a titleist d3 and a 104mph swing speed, don't you already have your answer?

With that kind of swing speed and distance, and trying to eliminate 2sided misses by having a "go to" shot shape, sounds like your game is right up there.

Perhaps the issue is more mental than anything.

Wish I could sympathise with you, but the last tee shot I made on Saturday at OCC barely covered 165m with great contact (est swing speed 81-82mph), so I am not really in the same category as you.

IMO, just get a consistent shot pattern for now.

Use it with course management for better stats and scores.

I would suggest that you get a driver that you can hit one way, either a fade or draw, consistently. That is what most of the best players in the world do. The learn one shot type that is a "go to" shot pattern that under pressure they can execute. When I played my best golf as a professional I essentially eliminated one side of the golf course by learning a shot pattern that I could repeat 9.5/10 times.

With respect to the new drivers, most are not designed for workability, but the 460cc heads are geared toward maximum forgiveness and distance. In order to "work" a driver I would recommend getting a smaller headed version. They tend to be far less forgiving, but will allow for greater workability depending on your ability. Additionally people that work todays drivers are special golfers that have control over their golf swing and the face of the club. They are able to "create" these types of shots on command.

Finally the golf balls of today are designed to fly straighter and spin less. When you are attempting to move a golf ball one way or the other you need spin in order to do it. The older golf balls were much more conducive to curving.

finding the fairway.... logical. Yet a bit elusive a concept I feel. Might be the case of club selection as well.

Big stick has a wide margin of error.

3w to tee instead?

less distance, more control, so maybe i should keep the big dog for those "cannot miss the fairway" wide par 5s?

I keep telling myself to tee off with 3W, but just can't do it. Esp the courses i play have a few holes with water trouble 190M off the tee. but i do for par 4's under 330M. i like to leave about 100m for my approach shot.
