| Missed by 2 days, Sunday was the 10th anniversery of Paynes death. One of the standout and most colourful players ever, I remember the day he died, tragic his plane lost pressure but no one put oxygen on so the plane just flew till it ran out of fuel. It was live on tv and the Air Force was following the plane in case they had to shoot it down so it would not crash in a built up area. It was only months after winning his 3rd Major.... I miss ya mate..... | |

| I followed him when he played a skins game at Laguna CC on a Monday back in the 90s. Very few spectators (ard 200 max mebbe) but there were no spectator ropes so I got to walking next to him and getting his autograph. Great guy. I miss him alot too. | |

| I miss him too. I loved his socks and he was a friendly golfer, from what I've read. I also recall the incident - I remember reading that the fighter pilots could see the passengers but all had passed out from the depressurization (I think). A real loss to the golfing world.
RIP Stew. | |

| I dont think they knew, apparently was leak in cabin so they were all unconsious....
"An F-16 fighter jet pulled alongside and tried to contact the crew. There was no response and the windows were fogged over. It was determined later that a cabin leak had caused the plane to slowly lose air pressure, rendering the crew and passengers unconscious. In a bizarre scene played out on television news channels, the plane continue to fly on autopilot. Air Force pilots were authorized to shoot it down if it appeared headed for a populated area, but it finally ran out of fuel and crashed in a field outside Aberdeen, South Dakota. Stewart and the five others on-board were already dead from hypoxia - lack of oxygen - before the crash. | |
