| Was ranging at OCC earlier today. Halfway thru my session, an old uncle came and took the bay behind me. I hit a few more shots and finished off with a few balls with my new driver (thanx Eric for the driver!!!!) and decided to rest for a while.
As usual, my sneaky eyes just had to peep at the uncle. He's old, frail looking, skinny and has a nice, smooth, easy swing. He hit a few balls with his iron. All the balls had a nice natural draw. Distance was good. I told myself maybe he was hitting a long iron. Next he took out a FW. Again nice easy swing. Natural draw. Whoooosshhh... ball went far.. same distance as my driver. Told myself maybe he using 3W.. and my driver not warmed up yet.. so.. not too bad lah. After hitting a few balls, he took out another FW. I was like "o-oh"... and Whooooooosshhh... true enuff.. the ball went further than my driver. By this time, he spotted a vacant bay near his kakis.. and decided to change bay as the bay he was using didn't have a bench. But before he switched, like as if he was trying to humiliate me further, he took out his driver and hit 1 last ball. Same kind of swing... same kind of flight. All I can say is.. he made me pack up and leave.
I know people always say distance does not matter. But when you see someone that old and skinny, etc with such easy swing.. hit so much further than you... how do you get over it??!!!!!!!!!

| There is a 72 yr old man that normally range in laguna.. He hits his driver longer and straighter than most young men.. When he hits balls, i just sit behind his bench and watch.. Prefer not to embarrass myself.. Just like u did .. | |

I'm generally ok if people (regardless young or old) hit longer than me. I mean.. i'm not exactly a big hitter. But to see someone do it with such great ease.. without much effort.. is really shameful. Here I am huffing and puffing.. trying to put in more force.. trying to get the ball to go further.. without much success. But there he is.. killing me softly with his swing.. hahahahahahahah

| @ Cyrano
I wonder why u should think this way. May i know how long have you been playing golf compare this so call very old man ? He might be a pro during his younger day ?
I am 55. If I am older then you and if you cannot even beat me in golf. Are you going feel embrassed or shameful ?
Do not need to feel shameful at all. Why pack up and go ? should have stay on and look for opportunity to learn. I am sure if old man can do it, you can do it too. (maybe not today)
You appear to have invented in equirement and take time to go driving ranges. Obviously, you wanted to play and swing better. So how are you able to swing like the old man that you have admire ? Learn from a good instructor, learning correct swing methid, train and play hard.
Do not just admire what other can do, learn from them and you will beter then them in time to come.
Sorry for being " long winded"

| hahahahaha.. Pak Slicer.. it's just the psychological block. Not so much about how long one has been playing. Just the stereotyping that an old uncle.. even if he has been playing for a long time.. will deteriorate over time. At least that's what I expect to happen to me.. hahahahhahahah. It's definitely not a true statement.. but that's what the mind plays with.. or rather that's what my mind plays. Like I say.. i'm not exactly a long hitter. In fact all my golf peers hit longer than me. But just the fact that this uncle is very senior in age, frail looking and doesn't seem like he has any muscles all his life.. left me in amazement.. hehehhehehe.
But one thing I noticed from his swing is that he has tremendous recoil. Most likely that's where he gained in distance. Time to get rid of this tummy i guess.. hahahaahahha.

72? That's freaking awesome! Ever noticed what iron set he used? Ben Hogan Apex? Honestly , sitting down behind him and watching him hit is pure joy.. The technique, fluidity , tempo and all that together makes up a beautiful swing.. For driver, he is using an s-yard driver perhaps 7-10 yrs old and no idea wat model it is. Woods he is using sonartec while irons i hv no idea..i am pretty sure he can carry easily 200m on the course w his driver from the way he was hitting at the range.. We will just chit chat after he swings and he tells me stories abt his life, kids etc.. And of cuz golf. Behind that fluid swing is also a gracious man..

| Hi Cyrano, You may have missed me at the bay next to you. Before the old man played next to you, I was watching you. You hit each ball. Meanwhile I slap the mat, shank a few and air ball aplenty. Man, I was wishing I could hit like you. | |

@Begbie. it is also very gracious of u to make time to chat n listen to this 72 yr old man. In our society now, not many ppl are willing to make time for anyone else anymore.

| @beehome: if u see him swing Im sure u wanna know how he does it.. Oh and one more, he is a an 11 handicapper.. The day i met him, he just shared with me the game he had few days b4 in marina .. He played 6 over , 78. With that swing and short game, i hv no doubts that he did. Oh.. He takes bus to range along with his sunday bag and when i offered to give him a lift out to the bus stop, he declined nicely and said he needed the walk.
At that point it gets a bit embarrassing coz i dun think i will be arsed to walk out of laguna to the bus stop. Its quite a long walk esp for an old man.. Needless to say younger folks like me..

| i guess the whole point is to enjoy your life and golf so much that all of us can have younger folks talk about our w=swing when we hit 72 years of age. Not easy and kudos muchos to the old gentlemen at 72 that both cyrano and begbie mentioned. | |

| I am amazed by his physical strength and flexibility to generate the speed.
I met one, some yrs back, he was in mid 60, from Spore but posted in KL then. Yes, he was a pro in spore. He played rifle steel shaft.

hahahaha.. bro.. that's nice of you to try to comfort me.. from what i recall.. all the bays were occupied by good solid hitters.. but in any case.. don worry. With coaching, it doesn't take long for you to start hitting every ball. But once you are there.. it is getting to the old uncle's level that seems impossible.. especially if u start realising that you don seem to have improved much ever since.. hahahahhahahahahhaa. Thats the beauty of golf lah.. the only enemy is yourself.
