Just sharing half-cent experience...feel free to add or comment.

For some only-golf-god-known reason, the ball takes shelter under the tree near the tree trunk on the side that you cant do your swing (righty or lefty).

How?
1. act innocent, kick the ball out to 10 feet away; banana kick the ball to the green?
2. drop another ball into the rough 10 feet away without buddy seeing, and yell "hey I found someone's ball near this tree and it is another Pro-V1"
3. being the righteous and honest upholder of RoG, declare ball unplayable
4. Bribe buddy to let you move the ball without penalty, or get super mulligan: take ball and place on the nearest point of relief: fairway...
5. use 5-iron to draw a 10 feet radius circle round the tree with the ball within, and declare GUR
6. inspired by TW, standing very near to tree, swing at the ball with a borrowed-from-buddy iron with 150% speed, and let go of the iron at the well timed moment before breaking your wrist (iron broken neber mind)

7. Not sure any one tried this before, use the most upright club in your bag (putter)... esp. best if u r using the vintage Ping Anser 1-A that gives the sweet piiiinnnngggg sound.

I will usually trust (7) (if 1 to 6 cant use), and hope the ball will land on the fairway forward.

Face your back to the target and hold a lofted iron in just your right hand and hit the ball backwards onto the fairway with a chopping wrist action. Can get about 20 metres with good contact. But if you make good contact with your right ankle, good luck to you for the rest of the round. That's what happened to someone who tried it.

But it's surprisingly not that difficult with a few practice swings. Key is a smooth swing and letting the club do the work aided by your wrist snap action.

In such situations, I'll take my medicine and play the ball at an angle which fits my swing even if it means hitting the ball further away from the green. This is intended to give me a better chance at an approach shot to the flag where I can swing the ball.

I've encountered too many situations where I pretend to be a hero and hit the ball using a variety of clubs or swings etc only to mishit it so badly that I end up with an even more difficult shot and/or injuring myself in the process.
