Safety of golf clubs at driving ranges

Hi all,

Just a thought that struck me.

What do you guys think about the safety of leaving your golf clubs at the bay while leaving it to go buy a drink, heading into the pro shop or topping up your card etc.. ?

Anyone here has got an experience to share where your clubs were stolen?

only know of one case when a friend of a friend actually lost a brand new set of clubs (think it was Ping) at OCC Range when he went toilet. The clubs and bag were expensive but not as expensive as the automatic IWC watch that was in one of the compartments! ouch! Seems OCC security cameras was checked but the image was not clear enough of the culprit. So yeah beware of your clubs, wallets, mobile etc when u leave them to go toilet, drink or get balls..

I see many just leave their clubs and cart/stand bag at the bay (chopped / reserve) and disappear for at least half an hour. Everything seems intact during peak and non-peak hours.

I only leave my stuff at bay to buy drinks from vending machine for short 3-5 mins, still okay. Maybe mine are cheap stuffs, no one want to steal...

hahah the case of losing the bag in OCC is quite classic lah...

He left his IWC in his bag... that one i can attest to it... coz i saw him take it off!

Plus it was a bitch trying to get insurance pay back...

You mean there are people who want to steal my worn off sunday bag, smelly socks, gloves with many holes and dent n incomplete used clubs... Not worth it leh....

Lol just replying to the TS, from your description I don't think wants your golf stuff.

Truth is, we need to be careful with our own belongings. I've had, on several occasions, left my wallet in my bag and gone off to the clubhouse only to later realize that I need to pay for drinks (sigh). I've been fortunate to always find my wallet intact but really, some amount of discipline is required. If we have expensive stuff stashed in our bags, we should be mindful of it. It may be a wallet, an IWC watch or a lucky penny but at the end of the day, leaving it in a public area (regardless of whether that area is minded by staff or not) is just an invitation for trouble.

It's akin to parking your car in a car park. If someone steals that expensive notebook from the trunk of your car, you won't have much recourse since the car park management typically disclaims liability for your car. They just put up big clear notices that you're responsible for your own vehicle and its belongings. It's then up to you to take the effort to watch your goodies.

The problem for many of us is that in Singapore, it's typically safe. In other countries like M'sia, we take much more care of our belongings. It doesn't mean, however, that Singapore is free from crime. Perhaps the chances of theft are lower but it still happens.

Just be more careful. If you have expensive stuff in your bag, then take it with you and not leave it in the bag. Better yet, dump your bag in your car so that it's not in the open. Yes, you may still have someone steal your bag from your trunk but the likelihood of that happening is far lower.

Low crime doesn't mean no crime.

but if its at a private club... prob more benefit of leaving clubs alone for a short while

i once left my car key plugged into the key hole of the boot and only realised after coming back from a round of golf at jcc. fortunately nothing was lost, but i think i was just really lucky since my car was parked right outside the range where there's the most human traffic (if you know jcc i'm talking about the few parking lots right in front of you when you exit the range).

on a more general note, there was once back when i was in secondary school and a thief came in to the campus to steal stuff. so i guess there's nothing stopping a thief from nicking stuff from a driving range which is much more accessible to the public than a school is. better to exercise some discipline and caution, maybe get the guy in the next bay to keep an eye on your items

The concept of the crime prevention triangle simply states that in order for a crime to occur all three elements of the triangle must exist: DESIRE, ABILITY & OPPORTUNITY

By eliminating any one of these elements a crime cannot occur.

DESIRE - The desire of a criminal to commit a crime.
This is beyond our contriol n if someone really wants to commit a crime he/she will.

ABILITY - The criminal's ability to commit a crime.
Again we cannot affect the ability of a criminal to commit a crime. They will find a way. They can be thousands of miles away, use telephones, internet...Not even physical impairment will stop some from committing crimes.

OPPORTUNITY - The criminal's opportunity to commit crimes.
This is the only element u can ccontrol and take the appropriate action to prevent crime. By removing the criminals opportunity for crime to occur u have effectively prevented crime.

It is dangerous to leave golf bag at MBGC after a golf game as there are no marshals and security to look after for you. I have seen a Japanese guy lost his golf bag there after his shower. Good to just keep the golf bag in the car right after the game.

My golf bag is so old it's a pain to ones eyes.....clubs are all at least 2 generation behind.....putter is at least 15yr old which I bot at $25. Though I suppose no one will give a 2nd glance but I try to not risk by unzipping my bag a bit, to show any bystanders.

So far I left my clubs and bag to go to the toilet, so far, no issue. But if you take off an expensive watch and place your wallet there, then there is a risk of being stolen...it might not be a professional thief, but if someone next to the bay saw this and tempted by greed, he/she might steal it.......Greed sometimes blind human conciousness...so better to keep things intact, in general clubs bag should keep from wallets and expensive watch....worst case lose the clubs and guess what, you find an excuse to buy a new set....

nope no issue for MBDriving Range and NSRCC .
