Help needed choosing clubs.

Hi there,
I shall be going to the World of Sport golf sale on Friday to purchase a driver, a putter and maybe a hybrid or 2.
Any reccommendations on what a beginner should be purchasing? It was suggested to me that the angle on the driver should be 12 degrees for a beginner.
Obviously cost is a factor and i am on a tight budget so want to try to keep my costs down.
Looking forward to your suggestions.

World of sports has very little variety of golf clubs , just so you know!

Start with irons first! Then short game then hybrids,woods and driver

If cost is big consideration, buy second hand clubs from far east or the marketplace.

Golfdirect or Isetan sales have more options for you if you want brand new clubs

Take your time, read past threads in gr on equipments. Attend demo days. Try as many clubs as you can. Buy the right club will be cheaper in the long run than buy stuff on sale and turn out they don't work for u.

Sales will always occur, you won't miss much from this wog sale.

I'd recommend a 2nd hand set first (and there are lots of good options here). If you're new, go for a set of cavity-back irons which gives added forgiveness, e.g. the old but gold Callaway X-20s or Mizuno MX-100 (or even MX-200).

Don't get carried away with buying new stuff since you are paying a premium for new stuff which may not suit you. Pay less first, get used to the game, enjoy it and once you're comfortable, invest in a good set.

Most of us here have 2+ sets so believe me, you'll have a lifetime of buying golf gear. No need to rush into it now. Just make sure you find something affordable which gives you a chance to play some golf, practise and have fun

After that... once the bug bites and the buying starts, there'll be no end

WOG normally don't have cheap stuff to buy. Mind you PRGR is not cheap at all, Tourstage not cheap also and not easy to handle for beginner. 12 deg? no need lah, 10.5 should do the trick if you worry, get 11.

I am picking up a set of irons and bag from a seller on this site. Very happy about that.
Have seen a Taylormade Burner driver 2009 model on ebay for around $150. Is this a good club and price?
There is also a Callaway Fusion FTi for around $11o. Anygood?
Putters: Have seen a putter on here as well with the shaft in the centre. Is this ok or best to get a putter with the shaft offset as per normal?

For the putter, can I recommend that you head over to a store like Golf House and try the putters there. You'll get a good gauge of what type of putter you like, e.g. blade, mallet, semi-mallet and also the length of the putter etc. Then you can make a more informed decision as to what type of putter appeals to you.

But it doesn't end there. I had always used a blade putter. In my mind, that worked for me. But, I've recently swapped to a semi-mallet and I don't think I can look back.

So, as your game changes, so too would your playing style, preference and equipment.

But if push comes to shove and you can't think of what to buy, go with the standard blade putter. It's probably the most common putter type in the market. But, you'll then have to decide whether you want it center-shafted or heel-shafted, and whether you'd like a plumbers neck etc.

Like I said, best thing to do is to try them all out and see which one makes you feel most comfortable.

Brendanm, how long had you been playing? If just beginning, I would suggest stick with irons 1st. Driver is one of the most difficult clubs to control in the bag eventhough it'll give you hell lot of distance if you hit it right. As for putter, just like someone suggested head down to GH and try out all the putters brand around and see which one you like best. If not just get any 2nd hand putter from the forum or FESC that suit you price range, if you just venture into golf only.

Righto, I think I'll leave driver for now. Will keep checking the marketplace here incase something comes up. As for putter, will take your advice and go try out a few at golf house.

Really if u need a driver, why not consider a 3 or 5 wood, loft angle higher, short and if get the right the distance also very good. Especially a 3 wood.....see TW, he's famous for shaping his 3 wood.

the bug is highly venomous, once the poison spreads it will affect every aspect of ur life and fortunately there is no known antidote..... happy golfing bros!

Technospaz raised some good points there. While the new set always look tempting, it doesn't really help much in early stage as you wont utilize the new set much. What matter most is better to have a set with you to practice while you are still enthusiastic rather spending lots of time to find the right one. There's never the right one as you will continue to be poison by new launches every now and then.
