Is there a GPS system that tells you to the pin? How does it knows what pin positions for the day?

Dear all

Thank you for your interest. I'll try it out and provide further feedback.

As for sharing, I'll prefer to do that selectively. Each his own.

It is possible but a question of accuracy. I noticed that the GPS system at MBGC does indicate the PIN position on the green and the distance. Some GPS apps (e.g. Golfshot GPS) allow you to pinpoint a point on the green and give you the distance based off that point. End of the day, GPS distance measurement is simply a math problem of calculating the distance between two coordinates. http://www.movable-type.co.uk/scripts/latlong.html

I used golfbuddy GPS, it show the distance of the front, middle and back of the green. I do not know of any GPS, pin point the position of the pin. That is also one of the reason I use range finder too.

Yes, you need to have the GPS coordinates of 2 locations - your current GPS location (which any GPS system can tell you, which is on the MBGC's buggy, and that is the moving variable), and the pin's GPS location or equivalent (which the club must provide, in this case MBGC updates on their system). Otherwise, I can't really think how a device knows where the pin is???

I suppose a combination of a rangefinder+GPS such as the one like Golfshot GPS can work, but I doubt you will pay cheaply for a GPS device with good quality rangefinding capability. Intuitively, I suspect this is where the question of accuracy comes in because the more expensive components of the 2 technologies is actually the rangefinding ones. Hence, the main reason why we are seeing more affordable GPS systems in all sorts of gadgets.

I tested the iamcaddie against mbgc gps and smartphone apps and also against a bushnell, writing a review for my members which will be up soon and will share the article here as well

each system has its pros and cons and have main benefits in different areas, probably appealing to different types of golfers

Hi,

I think it is a wondeful task you are attempting. May I put forth a request? I find a comparison table much easier to discern the findings as opposed to reading prose. Just a request for your consideration. Thanks.

Using the eyes and good judgement is the option for me unless there's graphics to indicate where you are and how far away to pin. Smile

Yups agree thats the best option if u r blessed with such a gift of distance estimation...

think the advantage of this gadget which makes it so revolutionary is that it vocally announces the distance (choice of “yards” or “meters”) to the center of the green from any tee box or from the fairway with the touch of a button. Quoted from their marketing literature! Quite amazing and hopefully its true! and no fidgetting/ squinting with range finders and scopes or GPSs on buggies with one or 2 hands whilst on the move....

Eagerly waiting for review...

I think Derek has sum up very nice " each system has its pros and cons and have main benefits in different areas, probably appealing to different types of golfers ". Maybe he can give you a better review of both system.

In the main time, as we are still waiting for Derek feedback. Here my personal experience since I have used the golfbuddy GSP and Bushnell Tour V2 range finder.

Golfbuddy vs V2

Battery : GPS need to charge about every 72 holes - V2 CR2 battery last for 4-5 months (use every week.

Map : GPS need to download those courses that you need from golfbuddy website for free through computer. Only need to download one time and the GPS unit can install thousands of maps. Unfortunately, if the courses that you need, golf buddy does not carry. You need to write to them and provide layout and score card and they will update map within a month time.

V2 : Just shoot at target, do not need any map or download whatsoever. Do not need to worry whether you have the map when you play in a new or overseas courses.

GPS : Give you a wider scope of information at one look: Show how far from water, bunker, green. How far for layout, front and back distance of bunker, total distance to the front, middle & back of green. Total distance of the hole when you are standing on the tee box.
You can mark from the tee box and walk to your ball in the fairway to check how far you has hit your tee shot.

VS can do all the above but you need to shoot at all target to get distance information. If you are those that have shaking hand issue then you might have problem using the V2 during rounds

My GPS
- It cannot pin point the pin position compare to V2
- It lost the display when you are too close to the green within 10m sometime.
- It lost the hole information that you are playing if you happen to borrow another hole fairway. You need to adjust the GPS to get back to the hole you are playing.

What I am going to say might start to offense people but please bear in mind that it is only my personal opinion.

I felt that GPS is more suitable to beginner or higher HCP players. They really need basic information like total distance bunker / hazard and try not to hit the ball there. distance to green and try to hit the ball on green.

Better player do not really need too much information at the same time as they can hit their ball better with less mistake in direction & distant. Example, par 4 ball on fairway, 150 m to the back pin position and a green side bunker behind pin and it is a fast green today. He will aim to hit a 140m at middle of green and let it roll rather then hitting 150m at the pin.

Another, ball in tight rough 23m to the pin and have to carry 10m to land ball in front of apron or not much green and need to carry 15m to land on green. All these distant measurement might be difficult to get it from GSP compare to V2.

Above were just examples. Please do not kill me for it White Flag
