I have been getting blisters on my Right thumb (I'm a right-hander) when I hit the range.
Am I gripping too tight or adopting a wrong grip?

The pressure point should not be on the thumbs of both hands. The pressure points should ideally be on the last three fingers of the left hand and 3rd & 4th fingers of your right hand (for right hander).

I usually tape a plaster over my thumb while golfing.
Never taken any lessons, but probably should

Out of a pressure level of 5, 5 being the highest, you should be gripping the club at no more than level 3.

take some basic lessons ... if u are inclined to practice, getting someone to teach you what is the correct thing to practice can only have benefits

hard and soft are subjective, make sure your grip is correct first, with an incorrect grip, you might be getting blisters even if you hold super soft
