I once had a Australian coach (for one lesson only though), young maybe 26-27. He was on Australian circuit before he come over to teach. He said it is damn difficult to earn a living as a touring pro though he is regularly playing 1-2 under par. He mentioned he needs to play 4-5 under par regularly to stand a chance.

Also had a friend's friend from Indonesia, an amateur who is -3 hcp. I asked him why he never turn pro, he told me that his coach advised him not to turn pro until he is -5/6 hcp, otherwise he will never stand a chance.

Jelvinpost, it is good to have a dream but for golf, you really needs talent and deep pocket to start with. I suggest you train hard now and when you play regularly under par, then you consider turning touring pro.

There is an article on Pg 114 "The 10,000 hour Challenge: Ever wonder what 10,000 hours of practice would do for your game? Dan McLaughlin did. So he quit his job and decided to find out.." It's the story of one man's journey towards turning pro.

There was an earlier online interview in Dec also. For some reason I can't copy the link, so just go to Golf.com and type in '10,000 hours' in the search box, then scroll down to the article.

There are others like you with the same pipe dream. Realistically speaking though, the senor tour would be a better bet. Some who have acquired deep enough pockets later in life have taken that route in the US. No one's written a Cinderella story on who's made it though.

It's definitely not easy to be a tour pro.
Apart from training hard there are a lot of things that you have to give up as well.
You are either practicing or going to the gym and get stronger, you work your
Ass off to play better everytime. But I think one of the hardest part is u will be judge constantly, like it or not. Be it at the range or going down on the course to play a social game.
I am not saying all, but a few of then will always comment on "why the pro swings like this" " why the pro can't hit it straight" "why they cant score well".

Honestly it's demoralizing especially when u have given up everything just to chase a dream. N it's normal for people to criticize and judge n you can't stop them from talking.
I have played on the Asian tour for 2 years.. I have chased a dream and it was tough. Not only you have to compete to make cuts and earn money. You have to learn to adapt to extreme cold weather and conditions that you have never met before. Honestly it was tough... But no regrets.
If I was to asked if I will pick the path again, I would say yes without hesitation. It was a sweet experience that not many could go through or have the courage to take.

Everyone had a dream, but how many of them get to live it? Or have the courage to pursue it even if the chance of failing is higher ? Golf is exactly like this.. Chances of failing is definitely higher... I give respect to everyone who try to give it a go, it does takes a lot of determination, just keep pushing yourself until u can't go anymore.

I'll be direct here with good intentions. U say u are 27 and not a scratch player yet? Then forget it and get a decent job. Don't waste time. Just assess your talent and do some maths. You can't survive. Just look at the scores of the Asian tour players and the prize money list. Even if scratch also means no money. How? Just play and enjoy your golf and give your tips to appreciating friends. It's more fulfilling this way.

For a little more perspective jelvinpost, here are some numbers Dan Mclaughlin has racked up since embarking on that 10,000 journey to turn himself from hacker to pro.

So far, he's racked up 2,533 hours as of Feb 24.

253,300 - number of shots struck (including putts)

160,000 - number of putts rolled

1,500 - hours spent on chipping and putting

300 - hours spent on course

300 - hours in the gym

271 - number of blog entries written

102 - worst round since he started keeping score in Dec 2011

80 - best round

13 - number of books read about golf or learning

7 - pairs of golf shoes worn out

6 - number of wedges worn down

Hey Hoges, I have to disagree to a certain extent.

27 is still young, with the right circumstances someone could easily get to scratch before 30, and that gives you at least 25 years of competitive golf.

But a scratch golfer has no chance on any tour I'm afraid. You have to be better than that.

But as others have said jelvinpost, chase that dream mate, you may end up like me a fat old broke kiwi, but at least you tried!

Actually one thing I notice was in the senior tour....the nobody in the young days, seems to be the ones doing better in the senior tour
