| Just got into this conversation with a good buddy of mine... most of us here are pissed with the huge influx of FTs here... this is actually an issue that has been around for quite some time but due to today's social media and internet reach... it is just talked about more compared to before... in the past, we were unhappy with 'malaysian part timers', 'bangla workers' and what-have-you-not... i do not see any difference in the general situation.. but the recent matters surrounding the PRCs just brings things to another level... i think a whole new low... I was having meetings with Chinese government officials recently and we were talking about a recent murder case. It is evident that they have no regard for human life. The specific case was a recent homicide of an American in China and with Uncle Sam questioning the Chinese government heavily and putting alot of pressure for an Investigation into the matter that the Chinese Government are expediting it and doing a REAL investigation. In the words of the Chinese official that I spoke to, "Of all the people to kill, that idiot had to kill an American. You cannot get away if you kill a foreigner in China but you can get away when you kill a hundred Chinese in China." Anyway... my question to all is that if paying more for everything; MRT, SBS Bus, Food, Groceries, utilities, HDB, property, etc, etc and I really mean EVERY SINGLE THING. (Maybe not stuff in BFG since they no longer have FT. Master, pls take this in jest.) solves the FT influx problem. Would you be willing to pay more to get Singaporeans serving you and doing the stuff that all the FTs are doing today? After all... the jobs that the FTs are doing now are just jobs that most Singaporeans do not want to do... Lets keep things simple for now... Lets just say Singaporeans do not want to do the jobs due to lower pay and the solution now is to raise the pay to Singaporean Expectation Levels and this will of course mean an increase in prices to compensate. After all, these are business being run, right? Running Charities is again another matter about some golden taps and toilet bowls.... just interested to hear the views here.. especially from the people i know personally... | |

| MC,
IMHO, we can pay more for every expenses, but how can we pay more if our pay does not increase to become more? If our pay were to increase, (ie, govt can set a minimum wage standard), how will the foreign MNC come to Singapore to set up their offices? IF these foreign MNC do not come to Singapore, we will face high level of unemployment and will have a hard time retaining talents within Singapore.
Apparently, nothing much can be done as this is what Singapore is built upon. Only question now for the govt is "balance"

| mizzy... u are right... it is actually not so simple... but i am just taking out the other factors first and just go straight to the first issue that majority raised...
"I do not want to clean tables/drive bus/be a tse-char cook/etc/etc because the pay is too low."
so the question is if you want Singaporeans to serve you, then are you willing to pay more?

MNC don't employ table wipers lah. our wage for middle and high level professionals are not bad.. but not that great either. its just that we are forced to pay exorbitant prices to GLCs to keep them profitable. we have one of the world's highest paid politians and electric tariffs and property prices not for nothing.

| simply said, "i am willing to pay more to ......" Some solutions must start with that sentence. Same as golf, i am willing to pay more to get properly fitted for more distance in my drive. On the same principle, i am now willing to pay more for Jap spec drivers...no matter how attractive Golf Direct price is. I am even willing to pay for JDM clubs (2nd hand ofcourse ...cannot afford new ones ). Ofcourse we all know Golf Direct is very popular and their cheap drivers are hot items (just see other thread Golf Direct sale...many pages liao...but i too buy from Golf Direct..their prices really too good to be true. maybe we know now how Pan West / Taylormade SG felt when Golfers Network brought in lots of cheaper US parallel imports....LOL

| Hawaii is worse off than Singapore in my opinion; property prices are higher, cost of living higher, put up with most of the USA policies which they have little influence over...
but the thing about USA, also abit funny... they embrace some FTs and they shun some FTs... in Hawaii, they accept the other Pacific Islander's imported labour.. from what I see, also accept the social problems that they caused... in main land? they accept the mexicans and the problems that they bring along...
Their immigration policies also need some work... They give green cards to PRCs who do not know how to speak a single word of English but TSA chase away the Indian with perfect English. This is not a problem that is only in Singapore.

| (I'm assuming MC meant Foreign Workers? because the jobs he sampled were clean tables/drive bus/be a tse-char cook/etc/etc) so i'm curious If Building operators/SMRT/SBS/Food stall owners, etc etc are finding it hard to find local workers to perform the jobs at the current pay level (which is acceptable to foreign workers), then are Sporeans already doing other higher paying jobs? or are they choosing to be unemployed rather than clean tables/drive bus/be a tse-char cook/etc/etc at current pay? Spore's unemployment rate is 2%. Lowest in years. Lower than most developed economies. So there's about 60K of residents unemployed in this country (working age residents are ard. 3.5M) Per the Stats Dept, "As at December 2011, there were 1,197,900 foreigners employed in Singapore. Excluding FDWs, the foreigners’ share of employment was 32.8% in December 2011, up from 31.4% a year ago" 60K unemployed residents vs 1m plus jobs need to be filled. No matter how you look at it. There are just not enough working age residents in this island folks. Gotta make babies hor Edited hor, forgot one zero

Spore's unemployment rate is 2%. Lowest in years. Lower than most developed economies. So there's about 6K of residents unemployed in this country (working age residents are ard. 3.5M)
