Hi,
Anyone of you got one of these rangefinders or have tried either or both of them?
I'm thinking of getting one, so want some feedback and how user friendly they are.
Does using rangefinders slow down play considerably?

I did some research, and seems like the Leupold GXII has lotsa features and pretty small and compact, and waterproof as well. Also got 6x magnification vs 5x on the Bushnell.

Lenny

Hi,

I just got the v2 slope recently and would consider it serve me well as I do hv shakely hand, so the pin seeker technology does help me abit. I hv try other brand and hv diff getting the distance, as every click give me a diff measurement sometimes can be as +/- 10m diff, but the v2 give me more accurate measurement, so far the diff I hv is +/- 2m. As for the slope, u just need to hold approx 2sec longer.

RC,
thanks!
When you say it take approx 2 sec more, does it mean it take longer to meter in slope mode?

Where did u get your V2 and wld u mind sharing how much u got it for? I looking around the web and cheapest is slightly more than US$300 exc shipping.

Hi,

You will get the reading shortly after aiming at the flag. To get the slope reading, you will need to hold on add 2sec after it has the distance reading. Think this work alike for most slope rf.

I got mine from Eric Big Fish. I think it will be cheaper to get it online but I would prefer to get it locally not only for warranty but also to support our econ as well as Eric too... Smile I think it will be better to give Eric a call for pricing. Not too nice to reveal the price online.

Happy hunting and hope you enjoy your gadget soon.

Hi, i have both the Leupold and Bushnell 1500 with slope .... imho , i find the Bushy is more user friendly and locks faster ... The Leupold have more features like a club selector and will prompt you the club based on the altitude .. Maybe Bro SamT can give more inputs as he used the Leupold a couple of times .. cheers ...

Lamts, I suppose you carry the Bushnell more often now than the Leupold?

The current positives from the Leupold for me so far is the waterproofing, more compact (it seems) and slightly higher magnification, but its also more ex... Other than the slope, I don't think i'll really use the altitude or temperature factoring features, which is why I'm also looking at the V2...

Yes , the Bushy is in my bag now .... the Leupold , as it is smaller , you need steady hands to lock the target .. i used my friend's V2 slope and it locks quite speedily too but you need steady hands too unlike the 1500 or 1600 .. hope this helps .. Cheers

Hi Lenny,

Like you I was also a little bit vexed about which rangefinder I wanted before I got the Bushnell V2. I have not used th eleuopold although I am almost certain that the Leupold will have better optics. However, we all just want the distance (more or less) so I'll share my experience.

I read the manual cover to cover before i started using the RF (Rangefinder, in this case Bushnell 1500 V2). After turning on the pinseeker mode, I tried it out on a few surrounding "sticks" like antennae, power station chimney, etc. The Pinseeker thing actually works better when you do a small scan over the flagstick.

So if you are ranging to a flagstick, say approximately 165M away and your first reading is 182M, do a very very small sweep across the flagstick. Once the pinseeker mode circle comes on as a confirmation, you've got your reading. It sounds a lot more complicated than it actually is.
Initially, I was also skeptical due to the shaky hands thing. But the more I used it, the more I realized that with the Pinseeker mode, it almost doesn't matter if you have shaky hands. It takes me less than 5 seconds to get an accurate read.

In addition, I've found it to be useful for;
1. Spotting distance to the flight in front so I know if it's safe to tee off.
2. Spotting distance to hazards
3. Generally getting a better view of a hole, esp one I've not played or am unfamiliar with.
4. Obviously useful for other reasons too.

Dan,
Thanks for the excellent feedback... seems like most of the follks here have tried or had quite good experience with the Bushnells... looks like i need to get my hands on one.

I am also leaning towards a RF (instead of GPS) for the very same 4 reasons u listed, seems like can put to more uses... heh heh...

When u say better optics on the Leupold, guess u are referring to sharper telescope, pinseeking ability in lower light?

I never use the Bushnell so can't give a comparison. But the Leupold that Mr Lam loans me works well, and quite fast too. I found the slope setting to ber extremely useful (which the Bushnell V2 has). But I must say that using such a gadget can be distracting if one is used to guesstimate distances from the course markers. Too much info can have negative effects...hahaha

One thing about the leupold is that sometimes I need to have a few reads before I am certain about the distance. I think it is bacause of my shaky hands, so the rangefinder is ranging other objects other than the flag. Not sure if this is the same experience for those using Bushnell.

One thing to share - in golfwrx, there is a thread on this same topic. An interesting thing is the talk about getting the Bushnell hunting model 1000. The claims were that it is the same as the V2, but at half the price. I haven't seen one or am looking for one, so not sure if true. Just sharing...

samt,
yes, i did read about that on golfwrx. seems like the leupold also has a hunting model (RXI and RXII) which is exactly the same as GXI and GXII, but just that the GX is "marketing" for golf use... both use the front priority (or pinseeking) to seek out the nearest front object or pin against a background of trees.

if you are still shopping around for a RF, let me know, maybe can get together.

Lenny,

Yes, I am infact refering to that when I said better optics. I have not tried them side by side so I cannot confirm this, but I would think that should be the case with Leupold. The problem with these things is you tend to get too dependent on them. I think we were all doing pretty ok before these things came along but I have to say, I do not have one ounce of regret getting it. Just too expensive.

You can get the normal Bushnell laser rangefinders (hunting) for US$159 at Walmart in US. If I remember correctly, the model is yardage pro 4500.

One thing to note - the accuracy of the RF depends on the size of the item you are pointing (ie pins are smaller and will only be accurate within 200 yards). So for longer distance, you may point to something bigger like a nearby tree that is pin-height.
