Recently, I had been tinkering with my shot for Driver , woods and Irons and this comes in handy....
You know after playing sometimes, Golfer like me tend to try new swing or tinker with it with the hope to improve it further...
I was playing Drive and my 5 woods about the same swing to my irons .. I find it very boring and trajectory was normal and distance not so great.
So, I try to tweak the swing a bit by trying to swing it flatter by allowing my club to drop a bit lower when the club was swung back . Resulting in a sweeping motion rather than a hitting (liken to swing an iron). This means that I swing my driver and wood differently from my iron.
Results shown that I am able to gain more distances, up to 20 m more , while of course not to much consistency. However, the feel is great as I can feel when I hit it perfect I can hear the driver max out sound (if you know what I mean ).
This leaves me thinking whether the shaft length of the driver and woods. My feel is that if they are relatively shorter (perhaps lesser than 45 inch, will also depends on your hegith) it will be much better to play them like iron shots rather than to sweep the ball. As for longer shaft, it will be practically difficult to play them like iron also.
In addition, I need to clarify that I mention having to have a swing closer to iron shot it does not mean having the same swing as when ball placement for driver and woods is very much different from iron (where we place them towards our left foot).
So, end of day.... I find swinging of drivers and woods need to be different from an iron shot. Perhaps, I would need to perfect it....... Well, I am not an expert but thought of sharing my thoughts for discussion...............
I used to do like you before. Helicopter swing. Sometimes kena, ball flies but direction can spam the whole forward field of view, ie, 180*
If you continue to do that, you'll find the bay to your immediate left is always empty despite a FULL house driving range Either I've taken out the poor unfortunate guy or the chap must be scared until he/she voluntarily vacate the place.
My swing now is diff. So, there are people playing on my left with no complaints. You should strive to have steep turn as oppose to helicopter. I saw the pics of JL in the charity tourny and I think you should try to emulate that. Don't try to do FULL turn; this belongs to people whose body are gifted with the flexibility. A 3/4 swing properly can deliver the goods BETTER than an incorrect FULL swing. I know because I've experience that.
One thing I check which I recommend you is if the clubhead can be seen at the corner of your left eye at the top of your swing; you've overswing! I stop my swing right away - it's no penalty even in competition and I start anew.
Again I no local teaching pro, take info at your own risks I totally agree with the overswing when you see the clubhead in the corner cos I have that problem. However, it's quite difficult to change when the tempo has already been used to this stretch. I was able to reduce the overswing for my irons (usually, if I remember to reduce backswing) but still quite difficult to do that for driver. Right now, I guess my drives are decent (6-7/10 fairway or nearby?) but it feels like I could do better in terms of distance and accuracy if the overswing is reduced. Any tips on curing this poor habit? Many thanks for the comments too!

Any tips on curing this poor habit? I have been having the same overswing problem for a long while. I managed to think "slow & 3/4" & get a shorter backswing for my irons, but still struggling with my driver too.

Many thanks for the comments too! Overswing helped me get my distance... but at the expense of accuracy, shoulder and back. Go for RSS... if you are not convince, just go for the free swing analysis, yes it's free... RSC (Paul at OCC) blew me away with how easy it looked that I got hooked.

Many thanks for the comments too! Quick reply b4 my boss sees me... 2night I go range to practise this: After setup, I close my eyes and begin takeaway and backswing. Eyes still close, do downswing into finish. Open eyes only 5 sec after you hear a solid connect of driver to ball. Reasons: To remove distraction in the swing. You trust your muscle, head position, feel at each impt point of transition - takeaway, cock wrist, begin turn, stop, intiate downswing. I shutup from now...because the next question I expect will be: if you are so good, how come still hdcp24?? If you see a 'blind' guy whacking balls at the range 2night, that's me. I report my findings 2morrow. If you really one to know what is slow backswing, forwardswing, beg mardan marmat to demo to you. If you can see samson gimson practise, we will know what is 3/4 swing...he also slow and steady.

UNQUOTE Sounds logical to a certain extent bro but that'll mean that the whole strecth of bays at the driving range I visit gonna be empty... Not confident if I can do something like that sia. Imagine after the swing, driver feels super light, then open ends to see that clubhead no more cos you super chucked the mat+floor. But I guess I could try out one shot during the next practice to guage/feel the safety of this drill... thanks! Oh ya, I'll probably warn you guys which range I going to visit on the day... haha

TObe There is a thread with information about the RSS http://www.golfrepublic.org/tips-tricks-f12/what-is-a-right-sided-swing-t1029.htm To simplify, RSS, the right side hits with a fixed left side of the body as in tennis forehand. LSS, the left side of the body clears out the way and the club extends away from the body unlike any other sporting example I can think of. In regards to this thread about driver vs irons. In the RSS we swing the same for all clubs and types of shots. LSS has 2 different swings for irons and woods. Both swing types are effective. Up to the individual to decide which makes more sense for their game Any other questions feel free to ask

| I'm only a beginner of 6 mths that has yet to break 100 and so my swing is still very susceptible to bad habits. I had a tune up lesson with my pro not one week ago and he decided that my iron swing was ok and decided to dedicate the time to my woods and driver instead. He corrected it to a point where it differed significantly from my iron swing but in that session my woods and drivers started to have a lot more consistency to it and was flying straight or with a slight fade/draw to it. Happy - I went away and practiced three more times that week at the range with the same results. So that Sat, I went on green and started playing. First hole, I stepped up full of confidence and whipped out my driver. Sure enough I duffed it. Thinking it was just a one off, I played the next 8 holes with the same results. Bloody woods and drivers were going all over the place. I tried teeing up, teeing down, choking down, playing the same grip and tee height consistently for a few holes, etc. Nothing worked. All this time my iron play, short game and putting was actually pretty consistent and so I switched to using my 3 iron to tee off and did not touch my woods/utility for back 9 and came back with 10 less shots than front 9. On hindsight - I realised that my Driver/Wood swing had fallen back into my iron swing path which led to all that bs shots I made in my front 9. It is frustrating that I spent 4 sessions trying to correct a bad habit and I fell back into my old habits once on green. I have since kinda lost the feel for my "corrected" swing and have booked another session with my pro this Sunday. | |

| Swing your club at full force 100% (any club) is asking for trouble. I used to let it rip with the driver every time, simply because seeing the ball go 300yds was so pleasing, but after a while you start to learn is it really worth it, I also found that studying players like 'The Big Easy' or 'Fred Couples' is a huge god send, to me they have the best swing out there and for someone who has issues with how much to swing a golf club, well study them.
I find that if you swing easy with fluidity and still have power, you will hit just as far. Try swinging to finish and not to smash the cover off it, because that is only half the swing.
What is important is gaining a good solid easy swing, that feels comfortable, practice with every club and get your yardage right. Then you can start, with a little confidence, playing around with 3/4 swings, drawing, cutting and manipulating the ball.
I'm lucky because I have a brother who loves the game and is a great inspiration to me, these are all his words he tells me, so I'm half way there. Believe me, it is sound advice.
