1025 vs 8620

I know many wedges use the 8620 mild carbon steel but forged irons using it is uncommon right?

Most forged irons like mizzies, nike VR etc uses the more conventional 1025 carbon steel for forging the irons.

Whats the difference (softness, durability etc) in the two? Which is "softer"?

So far, I only know of the Wilson FG62 that uses 8620.

Any comments?

different properties in carbon steel - whether its 8620, 1020 and 1025 are indication of the different properties used in the iron making. these include carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulphur and others.

the main factor in the choice of the material used is dependent on the design and the process of manufacturing. whether its rigidness, hardness or welding or machining or forging processes is involved, manufacturers will narrow their choice to certain metal composition to achieve best durability or ease of manufacture or economy of manufactured cost or a combination of reasons.

softness in a club like an iron is subjective and are dependent on the following:

1. design ( this is the key really - factors like CG, sole design, sweet spot, perimeter weighting, harmonic at impact are important in creating the desired "feel")
2. finishing
3. hardness of metal (hardness properties can also be changed by subjecting the metal to heat, forging or what we call annealing)
4. types of shaft and flex (getting it right means you get the perfect harmonics)
5. getting the correct lie angle (so that you improve surface contact)
6. i am sure there are more that i am not aware of.

so if the question is which one is softer, you know the answer by now...

I still dunno how the answer after your advise....

One more thing.. I guess that softness may be subjective to individuals.. scientific process gives measurable factors but feel is just a human sense that may be a composition of all the factors Eric listed.
