Also I feel it helps to have a little bet on just to make it more exciting. My favorite format is Vegas cos it has the most permutations. Like makes watching lower tier teams in the BPL more watchable.

| Going back to the original post and topic. Having been in Singapore for 2.5 years now, I have found that many and I don't think it would be a stretch to say most of the golfers that I have encountered, students, playing partners or just golfers I have met here at the JCC range, really don't understand the handicap system, how it works, and what its purpose is.
The only way to know for sure how to assess strokes during competition is by using the handicap system. If i'm a 0 hdcp and you're an 18 hdcp, it's quit simple, you get one shot on every hole. If we both have accurate handicaps, there is no doubt that it should be a fair game and the winner should be the golfer who can play closest to or maybe even a little better than their ability / handicap.
I know that I have written about this before but the only way to have a truly accurate handicap is to submit every single scorecard no matter how good or bad and let the system tell you what your handicap is. By leaving out the good scores or by leaving out the bad scores, golfers will often try to manipulate their handicap and when this happens, the system is broken.
I know that I am living in a fantasy when I talk about how the traditions and the history and the ideas of etiquette and fair play are supposed to outweigh the importance of winning and pride and manipulated handicaps and bargaining for strokes and whatever other tendencies golfers have, but it's true. I think that one of the reasons that people don't use the handicap system the way it is designed is because they don't really understand what it means or how it works.
I could go on and on and on but my next student just arrived so I'm off to teach a chipping lesson.
Have a great weekend!

| Hear Hear punkrockpga. Realistically speaking, I've observed that the ones who use the handicap system to get a leg up on their playing partners even before the first tee-off are quite often the ones who are quick to propose a 'friendly' wager. Funnily enough these gamblers are usually the more experienced golfers who should know better. Or perhaps they do know better... enough to massage and manipulate both handicap and playing partner. | |

| I think it's when you win the hole by holing out from outside the green either by chipping or putting. | |

| I only bet with ppl I know, ie my own group. That way we know what our average score are. THe handicap doesn't really mean much because it's derived from your best moment of game rather then your average score playing.
The point of betting is to make it interesting as such that you can't really tell who is going to win. If one party is always winning the game then its obvious that the match is not even. In that sense I don't see the point of betting if the outcome is always fixed, hence we introduce stroke. Another bet that is quite popular is sixes, this way you can be strong but you need to partner with all 3 of your flight mate which normally even out the odds.
happy betting | |
