2 Hybrid vs 3 Woods Empty
PostSubject: 2 Hybrid vs 3 Woods   2 Hybrid vs 3 Woods I_icon_minitimeSat May 14, 2011 8:38 pm

Peeps, I need some advise to whether a 2H is a good replacement for a 3W as I'm having all sorts of problems with my 3W like not being able to connect it consistently or launching it properly, but I dun have such problems(generally lah) with my 3H.

Any advice for me?

Don't know about you, but i firmly believe in making my 3W a go-to club when there's more than 200m left to the green. I dun think i can play if it's not in the bag...

But if there's more than 200m left to the pin and your 2H can go 170-190m, you are left with <50m chip, which is a not-bad outcome if it's a long par hole. Unless, of course, you are going for the pin, that's another story then..

I believe in course management rather than chiong cos the longer clubs dun really listen to me sometimes.. I think it's better to place the ball at a distance which is your scoring club. However, that's if you are playing crap like me. If you are pro, ignore the above and attack the pin pls as it makes the game more interesting..

3 wood typically 15 deg. 2 hybrid typically 18 deg. If the same player hits both clubs flushed, 3w will carry further right? But that is just theory. Many players dun Play fw because they Cannot hit it to save their lives. Just play hybrid to the lowest loft u can handle. I've been thru the phase too.

Consider 4 wood (17 deg) bros. I found its easier to launch than a 3w, and carries longer than a 2h. Ball still land soft from 190m. Now i dare to cheong when the opportunity arise.

With the 910f, i can reduce loft to 15.5 degree (and carry a 3h) or even go up to 18 degree if i want to reduce weight or an extra wedge. Its my favorite club in the bag.

Any reason why you wanna hit ur 3wd off the fairway?

If you have to do it often, even on par 4s, it means that your drives are barely pushing past 200m.

If its for par 5s, keep the ball in play and get 3 on in regulation. a 3H 2nd shot will leave you with prob the same club in for the approach given that you struggle w the 3wd anyway.

Confidence comes from decent ball striking and once you start hitting those awry shots, it might affect the rest of the game.

new 3w have longer shafts and larger heads, no wonder more difficult to hit.

i think this question was asked sometime ago and in my opinion, it all comes down to your own ability, a study done in golf digest stated that for the average swing speed (95mph) a 3W would give a same lofted hybrid 25 yard difference however, for a 105mph swing speed, the difference is a mere 5 yards... therefore, i think you should find out as to which category of player you belong to...

personally, i have a 3W and a 3H... and i find that i do not have much distance gaps / issues with this set up...

Hi S70B,

Actually the main reason I wanna use a 3w or 2h is to use it for tee off on tighter par 4s and of cos the occasional inviting par 5s. My drives are ard 220-230m carry, and when I'm able to hit my 3w flush, carry is ard 200-210m. Problem is the percentages of hitting the 3w flush is not high. I hit my 3h(19*) ard the 200m mark and generally feel quite comfy with the club.

In this case, do u think I should just go onto a 2h instead as it should probably feel close to how my 3h feels unlike the 3w?

Appreciate all advice and inputs, guys!

bogeyman, think my distances are very similiar to yours....

i carry the 3w, mainly for the shorter or tighter par4s....

however, i also have the 5w which predominately i hit for the longer par4s or cheong the par5s, i hit the 5w abt 190-200m....

i have also the 16* hybrid which i keep (not in the bag) at home, this hybrid is to replace my 5w if i play links courses (lower trajectory), i find the 16* hybrid not as far as my 3w (cos length of 3w is 43in but my 2H i only 41in)

my usual setup is driver, 3w, 5w and 4H

my alternate will be driver, 3w, 2H and 4H

both setup closes up my distances quite nicely.....

PostSubject: Re: 2 Hybrid vs 3 Woods   2 Hybrid vs 3 Woods I_icon_minitimeTue May 17, 2011 4:24 pm

I can only offer some online advice

- are u a better striker of the ball with woods or irons? Some people might find this quite obvious but it isn't. I grew up hitting a 5 wood most of the time and hit it more accurately than my mid irons. That's becos I played the ball as a 'sweeper' rather than a 'digger' early on so I played woods better.

If u hit ur hybrids better than woods, chances r the extra weight helps ur swing out in flushing contact. Also, u might be less of a sweeper.

If u decide on opting for the hybrid route, do try them out first before buying one. Nowadays, hybrids are built differently. Eg the Adams Idea pro A12 and tech V3 r both hybrids but when u hit them, exhibit different ball flights. Dun assume they are all the same and the cheapest option will do. Take ur time to try them all out.

My point wrt playing golf instead of trying to chiong everything:

If u drive it 220m on avg, most par 5s will be left with 250-270~m for ur 2nd shots. What r the chances of hitting it on from that length? Also, how good r u with ur wedge game from inside 100m? If u hit ur hybrid 190m, it's like the same club in right?

Likewise for tight par 4s. Assuming u hit ur 3wd well, what club do u hit ur 2nd shot in with? Also, if u had teed off w a hybrid, would ur 2nd shot be very much longer?

frankly, I find a long club replacement will give more problems than help. If u buy a 2h and it works well, great. If it doesn't, u leave urself a lot of self doubt about ur ability with the long clubs.

Lastly, that 3wd u carry might just be ill-fitted. Go to a fitter for an analysis and see what he says.

heh TS,

I carry a 2H, 3H and 4H.

I used to carry old 3w (Vsteel) with my Kasco 16.5" Hybrid but the distance is very close and i decided to take the 3W out since i can hit the 2H better, so i bought a 3H and 4H now.

The 2H on Tee up can go 200m but from Fairway i can probably get about 180 to 190m hit flush. I prefer the 2H as it can take me out of rough easily.
