3 Wood Shafts - Help? Empty
PostSubject: 3 Wood Shafts - Help?   3 Wood Shafts - Help? I_icon_minitimeMon Mar 21, 2011 10:06 pm

Any advice on fitting a 3 Wood shaft?

I'm using a Fujikura Motore F3 60 Stiff on my Driver and am loving it...

Choices :

1) Fubuki Alpha 60 Stiff
2) UST Mamiya 63 Stiff
3) Motore F3 60 Stiff (Again??)
4) Aldila RIP 60 Stiff

Any other shafts i should consider? What do you look for when fitting a 3 Wood shaft? I was told last time to get a lighter and more Regular flex.. Is this true?

go look for a club fitter, or look for your TM friends at Cathay, they should be able to advice you.

Anyway, if you look at the WITB of the touring pros, you should have an idea of what kind of spec you should go for. I felt that it should b heavier, but i may be wrong cos i dun know much....

Hi Pushslice

Love to do a FR but find it hard to explain. I'll rather u go down to see and perhaps experience the fitting process yourself... Basically u'll be fitted against a database of golf shafts from data obtained from your swing via trackman and other means. These data are then input into a computer software and it will recommend some 'ideal' shafts for your swing type. They have their method of assessing one's suitability to various golf shafts. Of course those numbers can be tweaked.. each time u do that, diff shafts would be recommended. Damn cool.

Rather scientific/objective way of choosing shafts... be prepared that u may not be fitted too your favorite brand shaft... I was skeptical at first but when the final product came (I reshafted my 3 wood) it worked! But that's for me.

My suggestion is to make a booking as the fitting process is meticulous and can be quite long (of course that would entirely depend up to you). Kudos for Khee Wei for his patience in fitting me; he went pass his closing time by quite a while in order to find the 'ideal' shaft for my swing. He never did complaint at all. I appreciated his professionalism very much.

Go try it out yourself and make your own opinion. Best of luck!

tfp, from what i've heard abt your game and quality of your swing, and your WITB, i believe that you should use the same shaft as me, namely a mitsubishi diamana whiteboard 83x... i believe that fairway wood shaft shld always be as heavy and as stiff as you can handle...

sham, not sure who you've been hearing the hearsay from, but i assure you (and myself too) that i am not even remotely close to being able to handle a 83X.. good lord! But do you truly believe that it should be heavier and stiffer than the shaft on your driver? Any reasons for this? I'd like some indication before i go for a fitting, so at least i know what to look for..

Jason,

the markings on the shaft means nothing unless you weight the clubs to get a ascending order to match your set.

there should be no disconnect in the set..simply put, if your driver is fitted with a 57 g shaft, the total weight will be in the 310 gramme region. hence your 3 wood should ideally be in the 325g to 330 g range (60 to 65 g shaft) and the 5 wood in the 330 to 335 g (60 to 65g shaft) range. its a naturally ascending order much like a set of irons.

if someone buys off the rack and do it randomly, he/she will experience what we call weight disfunction and will find it difficult to achieve the "one swing for every club" scenario. they may have to hit harder for one club and ease off for another.

back to flex, it all depends on your takeaway and tempo. i have seen your swing. assuming your driver is set at 248 cpm (stiff at 45 inch), your 3 wood should be 262 (SR at 43 inch) and your 5 wood at 273 cpm (S at 42 inch). i am pretty sure that is something that you can consider. there is a reason why the 3 wood should be softer than the 5 wood.

how you swing the club will determine what type of shafts is best suited for the optimal launch and flight. Torque is also an important consideration for dispersion and launch spin and flight.

i recently bought a 17 degree 910f in 70R. the reading off the frequency analyser was a stiff. those who help me run in the shaft knows what i mean.

hope it helps.

Contrary to wat u have heard, your 3wd shaft shd read heavier than ur driver shaft.

This is to help u keep the weighting of your long clubs constant. a 60S at 46.75" and a 70S at 42-43" shd come out to roughly about the same weighting if you pull them out to check.

Since u playa 60S in your driver, ur 70S in ur 3wd is fine. However, knowing you have read extensively on the net, you shd know that the Fuji Blur is a weak noodle.

If you have trouble launching the ball, you shd consider a softer tip stiffer mid section shaft. If you have problem keeping the ball down, a stiffer tip, midsection but softer butt can help that.

Hey Eric and S70B,

truly truly appreciate the insight.. It really put me on the right track, and i'll be the first to testify in unison and agreement with your (S70B's) remark on the Blur being a weak noodle. Wink

I guess what i've been told along ("Play 53 Regular on your 3 Wood for more whip") was a little misleading then..

Once again, the old-hands in the forum have come to the rescue! Its true what they say about experience being the mother of all intelligence then. Thank you guys...

S70B, I surmising the same principle applies for hybrids as well when you mean long clubs?

All in, very insightful sharing here. Definitely a help to all, be it newbies or SBs.

it will be presumptuous to make any kind of judgement without first analyzing your swing and measuring the flex of your clubs (preferably with the grips off).

by and large its best to weight both clubs instead of relying on the markings on the shaft. the type of grips also contribute to the overall weight.

asahi - there are 2 ways to fit hybrids - using the fairway or iron as a weight and swing guide. hence while cross fire works like magic for some, others may prefer to swing their hybrid a little more like their fairway wood. distinctively the cobra baffler and the cleveland halo are at 2 distinctively end of the spectrum.

so the cleveland halo is more like irons and the baffler is more like woods? What abt the taylor made burners? more like woods or irons?

Hmmmm.... if you are hitting them well.... its better not to know or else it might just confuse you on how you should hit them.
