On 19 Mar (1910 UTC), it will be lunar perigee (when moon is closest to earth). Of significance, this will be the nearest distance in 19 years.

Due to job requirement for the past 7 years, my biz trip to japan is so frequent that this has become the second country i spend my time most beside my home town, and I have made so many friends there, be it work related or not.
Today, I heard and saw the news, i almost teared....because of the extreme worried for all my friends there...they have been a great bunch of friends taking care of me when i was alone there needed help...
I manage to contact most of my friends in Tokyo and glad to hear that they are safe, except some have minor cuts due to falling objects...but till now, I'm still not able to contact any of those who stay further up north...
sorry that i might sound offended and take it personally, but i do not find talking about sushi or whatever market is a sensible thing to do and i do not find them funny at all....
i continue to pray for the rest of my friends for their safety and to the victims of this natural disaster

8.9 quake is massive. Living in California over the past several years I have had some minor ones and even back in the 90's I lived very close to the Northridge quake that was about 6.7 but had one of the highest ground accelerations ever recorded in North America. That was super scary and actually knocked me out of my bed.
I can only imagine the devastation, fear, and general fear that is occuring in that region right now. I send out my prayers and well wishes to any one in that area was affected by this disaster.
I just saw a fox news report that there are some issues with one of the Nuclear reactors and a possible radiation leak. I hope that is not the case and if it is they contain it very quickly.
Also a side not...prayers go out to anyone in the Christchurch, NZ area as they were affected by a earthquake recently as well and lost 65 people.

Hi Golf-snowman,
I absolutely understand your anger, I have friend at Chiba and many more at other areas (thankfully they are safe). I am sure Duval_S, 4dtoto and MC have friends in Japan and are also concerned about them, they are just trying to lighten up the moods without any other intentions.
