10.5 vs 9.5 degrees Driver. What is its relationship with distance? Empty
PostSubject: 10.5 vs 9.5 degrees Driver. What is its relationship with distance?    10.5 vs 9.5 degrees Driver. What is its relationship with distance? I_icon_minitimeWed Feb 09, 2011 9:21 am

i am currently using 10.5 degree driver and it has been delivering well to me. It gives me a consistently high ball flight and predictable distance. However, i am not sure if i am losing distance as a result of the high ball flight. of cos, it is not favourable against the wind.

Recently, i noticed some of my friends using 9.5 degree driver. i was wondering if changing from a 10.5 to 9.5 degree would increase my driving distance?

Any advises?

I believe a lower lofted driver (9.5) as opposed to a higher lofted driver (10.5) should give you extra distance (all things being equal with your swing etc). My reasoning is that the lower loft will give you lower ball flight but increased distance. This means that you trade height for distance.

Again, I can't hit a driver consistently to save my life so take my comments with a pinch... or bucket... of salt.

doesn't it make sense that a higher ball flights mean more air time, which again means that there will be more carry? Very Happy

i think you should really get fitted if your swing is grooved in and consistent...

personally, i've tried 10.5, 9.5, 8.5 and 7.5 and my best distance is achieved using a 8.5* driver... so i believe that it would really depend on your swing, swing speed and a lot of other factors... dustin johnson uses a 10.5* and bombs it a mile... seek out DGman and ask for his advice...

hi there..cant comment the theory in general, but I can comment on my personal experience.

I switched from 10.5 to 9.5 because I had been launching my drives too high (18-19 degree) and with too much back spin (4500+ rpm). All from trackman at BFG. Results were short carry distance and almost no roll.

Since using 9.5, I've lowered my launch angle by 2-3 degress and lower backspin by about 500-600 rpms. My carry has increased by about 10-15m, with a little bit more roll on firm grounds. I do not see significant increase in side spin so that's a plus.

the answer for you, you will find by testing both heads side by side with a launch monitor. Anything else is theory only lah. every person swing is different

Timmy, you give him Fwd.. he also hammer across the net lah.. he is not human, so cannot take as comparison. I saw him hit Hybrid at wgcc, i think a 19 deg. WGCC net, upper tier.

For me, trial & error, 9.5 gives me less spin compared to 10.5, so maybe an extra 5m more?

And yes, Timmy is truly a monster. affraid

Where is a good place to get fitted if I want to keep my drive head and want to try a different shaft? Would like a place with a launch monitor.

getting the right loft starts from more than a few factors:

1. the clubhead design - CG and crown weighting
2. offset and face angle (open, square or closed)

then you got to match the loft of the desired head to your clubhead speed and the flex of your shaft.

anyone who is using a 9.5 with a 85 mph clubhead speed is not optimising his/her drive. but then again you got to measure the true loft of your driver. alot of drivers out there are 12 degree masquerading as 9.5.

the relationship is if you are not swinging close to the 95 mph range, a 10.5 is far more suitable for your drives but maybe not for your ego.

Can you launch the ball consistently at <1* different?

Do the manufacturers make the head precise enough to have within 1* tolerence?

Can your shaft get back to it's position consistently during impact?

Does 1* make much different?

half degree is already massive....in the head! (human not club head)

thats why copywriter for golf equipment are as good as mind doctors when it comes to writing the words that golfers like to hear. its also the reason why golfers would rather buy new drivers than admit there is a problem with their swing.

I use a 9.5 but still create too much spin... it is my swing causing all the problem and not the club...

I have the tendency to close my loft at the point of contact specifically magnified with driver and wood......

I think I should get higher lofted driver.

Alternatively, I ask my right wrist to be quieter.

Hi DGman, as per what you have mentioned..

1) How can one determined the loft off the shelves?

2) As per what you said, if i am swinging at 85mph, 10.5 loft. What is the expected distance one should be getting?

kindly advise.. your words are enlightening. Smile

between 1m - 250m, depending on your swing, roll, launch angle, smash factor, AoA, Clubface angle, club path, etc etc etc etc etc
