News clubs for newbie?

Guess I have fallen into another poison pit hole.....
Well... That's beside the point....
On my third lesson now n dear coach was hinting that I should get myself some personal clubs...
Been looking around for some decent sets but I'm confused with all the variety.
Finally I'm looking at this set named Callaway Warbird complete set.
Seems like comes with all I need.
But about the shaft material and stiffness, which one should I get?
My coach suggested graphite (which some online searches says that it is meant for elderly, ladies etc).
Stiffness? Regular he says.
But perhaps some good bros (or sis) here can give me some advise?
Is this a decent set to start off with and what kind of material n stiffness should I be looking at?

ur coach must hv observed ur swing speed and estimated that a regular flex would do for you at this stage to be able to launch the ball. most coaches recommend graphite (albeit more expensive) than steel shafts is that it has more flex to allow your estimated regular swing speed to be maximised to launch the ball with an extra kick. I would just listen to your coach and get as he says a basic set graphite R and work on your swing till u get it right (more or less) before u start delving into the venomous world of aftermarket shafts.

again u will hear frm different Grians that manufacturers hv different quality stds as to their version of Regular or Stiff and one brand's S may be another brand's R n vice-versa... Some will say its down to the CPM (cycles per min) of the shaft that determines if its suitable to your swing speed and unless u know that statistic (which again u need instruments to measure), its hard to tell the flex of a particular shaft unless u can measure its CPM... then theres the weight of the shaft n matched to the weight of the club head (some driver heads hv adjustable weights)....

Aftermarket shafts can range from $100 upwards to $1600 each depending on brands, specs, new or secondhand and where u get them from ...

Don't get warbird lah. Get the x series...go golf bargain lah

My take is that the Callaway X-20s (if you can still find em) are an ideal set for beginners. They are very forgiving. Plus, because they are from the 2008 season (IIRC), they should be pretty affordable right now.

That said, there are various topics on this issue. And I've said before (and will say again), go for a 2nd hand set of clubs first. Let me see if I can dig up my older post on this.

Why don't you ask your coach to go with you? He knows your swing best and can probably give you the best advice.

Agreed. I hv tried hitting that club before and sure is easy to hit. U can rely on TS review on clubs coz he is an equipment ho full time...

graphite for elderly/ladies is not true...its all marketing talk. best to try out the clubs before you make a purchase..especially if you are starting out coz what works for one golfer may not work for another second hand sets are good to experiment on especially the past season models..work on the fundamentals coz equipment can only help that much..as someone once told me "game improvement sets only work if you have a game to improve on"

muck around with some second hand stuff first and you probably can find some real bargains here if you camp in the marketplace site long enough haha..

Now, I'm definitely going for a second hand set (nearly gotten a John Daly set that is just $88) and after reading an article on newbie golf clubs selection, I decided to go for something more $$$. Basically the article is saying that newbie should never get a cheap set. Go for a better one but second hand to save on the $$$.

Now how deep will that burn me?

The callaway X-series is a classic one. Almost can never go wrong with it, having played 18 and later 20 myself. Actually I think Golf bargain still got some X-22 on sales u can take a look on them.

individual iron? go fesc should be able to find one, but just a piece of advice if you seriously into this game get a set......

Then u can try looking at FESC, but still if you swing...the feel is totally different.

I'm playing with a set of callaway x-22s. really forgiving and nice set of irons. it should be going at a pretty good price for beginners if you happen to chance on one. I'd say, depending on the condition, $300+ will be a good price.

got myself a Callaway X20 iron set.

Your first set isn't going to the last one. The first set is for you to find out what type of player are you, type of shaft flexibility you are comfort with, head weight and most important is what you find lacking in the set. From there, you will narrow down your selection on what you need to play the game you want. I always suggest ladies ASIAN set as a start as generally newbie tends not to have enough strength to execute the shot, rather being control by the club eventually. Lighter set will allow you more control and slowly you develop the swing and strength to progress to higher range set.
